Hello,

I'm just trying to get started in magic and thought a forum would be a good place to start! I'm quite interested in close-up magic with cards and coins and that sort of thing, and I'm trying to work my way through Expert Card Technique by Jean Hugard. Finding it pretty difficult, but I'll keep trying! [/i]

Hiya and welcome to TM.

You might like to have a look at Mark Wilson's Complete Course to get you started, there's lots of very nice effects in there that are all really clearly explained. :D

Thanks for that Lady of Mystery, I think I've read somewhere that Mark Wilson's book is quite a good one. I might have to add it to my christmas list :p

Welcome!
Expert card technique might not be the best starter for cards. See if you can get royal road to card magic and mark wilsons.

Thanks spooneythegoon, I'll have a look at the royal road book as well. I was just wondering about playing cards as well. I'm currently using some basic cards I bought from a newsagents. What is the difference between these cards and the bicycle decks that are in magic stores?

You will probably be fine with the basic cards, but bicycles probably handle a bit better and most gimmicks have bicycle backs. :)

Oh right, I'll probably stick with these cards for the time being then. Thanks for the reply.

Put down Expert Card Technique and walk away from it slow. Pick up Mark Wilson's book, learn the basics. Then perhaps pick up Expert Card Technique. Actually I would pick up a few others before Expert Card Technique. I just think it is not a great book to start with.
