Its all in the cards...

Postby Archie » Jul 16th, '04, 15:50

Let me make a confession up front, I love playing cards...and dice...and board games...and...little metal figures that can be moved round a board....ahem sorry getting carried away - the point is I love games of all sorts and I think that is why with magic its card tricks for me - in spades (excuse the pun)

Consequently I have ended up with a rather eclectic range of cards which I use for tricks - to date:

1 bicycle deck - blue
1 Black Tiger deck
1 Angel Season 1 deck
1 Samuel Hart & Co c1900 deck
1 UK Flag deck
1 1977 Royal Wedding deck
2 Waddingtons No. 1
1 Carta Mundi Blue deck
1 Dutch replica deck

Now I use them with different audiences - sci-fi friends get the Angel cards (horrible cards to work with), normal friends get the bikes or Black Tigers - and the others come out to reinforce a joke ie I use the UK and Royal deck with my American family etc Also having small hands there are some things I struggle very much with when using bikes which is where the Waddingtons and Carta Mundi cards come in.

i just wondered if I am the only one to do have such odd collection or is this normal for an aspiring card magician. Any positive answers welcome as my wife has started to poke fun at me as the next padded envelope arrives on the door mat with "another set of cards?" as she says, contained inside...

help me prove to her that I'm not mad by telling me you all do the same!

(I did try telling her that you all have more than 20 packs of bikes stacked up in your cupboards as they wear out but I don't think she believed me!)

Errr...

My deck collection is now just over 100 different types.

I too am a sad git, err, I mean, card collector.

I am fascinated by them, to be honest. Although I still prefer to perform with Bikes and Bees more than anything else.

WEIRDEST DECK I OWN:
It's got to be a deck of SKOL lager playing cards that I nicked from a pub when I was a kid. Why weird? Cos there's some 'notes & scribbles' on them from someone way back when, and I've spent 20 years wondering who wrote them and what it means.
Oh, and some crooked cards. Got them in Amsterdam or Belgium, I think. Check http://www.unclesgames.com/product_info ... anner_id=1

NICEST DECK I OWN:
Invisible Cards - clear acetate cards, just wonderful! Handle like regular cards too. Great for most tricks. Get them from www.iwantoneofthose.com

MOST PRECIOUS DECK I OWN (For sentimental reasons, not monetary value):
This is undoubtedly a special 'Millennium' set of Bikes in a tin. Bought for me by Mrs Seige on one of her trips to the states.

MOST RECENT DECK PURCHASES:
Black back bikes and some bullethole cards from the Gadget Shop

'TALK OF THE PARTY' CARDS:
I have two really cool decks I bought in Amsterdam. One of which is a nude deck (ladies, ladies, ladies) but done quite tastefully. The other is a glow-in-the-dark deck. It's practically unusable, but looks dead cool ;)

MOST HATED DECK:
My Iraq's Most Wanted deck—cos I spent £30 on it, and then saw them for sale for a £5'er. As a card-a-holic, I just HAD to have one. It never pays to be an 'early adopter'.

MOST EXPENSIVE DECK:
Hmmmm... although I don't own it yet, check out the stainless steel deck at www.iwantoneofthose.com. Eye candy.

MY FAVOURITE DECK:
Currently is the Black Tiger cards. Not the red pips. They aren't quite as pure. I love the Tigers cos they're just perfect for a lot of the 'dark' magic I enjoy.

Love em all!

Yeah, Round cards, Crooked Cards, memorial Cards, Union Flag Cards, many different cards. We are probably all as mad as each other.

If you have an interest in playing cards try

http://www.playingcardsales.co.uk/index.htm

The company is based in Edinburgh and is billed as

"We are probably the world's most comprehensive
dealers in modern playing cards and Tarot cards."

I got an ID from them and a crooked deck years ago for no other reason than to own them.

I also have a variety of risqué decks, one a full deck where you heat the card and the women’s cloths come off, and most of my friends think they are MAGIC

When I looked at the web site they now appear to be bassed in France :?

So I dont know if the Edinburgh shop is still there, but there must be money in selling Playing cards and associated items
