Twisted Films

Postby Jordan C » Sep 7th, '10, 16:46

I'm not really much of a film buff but in the last 2 days I've watched as many films as I have in the last year (4 lol)

TWO of them were pretty twisted...

OLD BOY - a korean film with subtitles where the main character gets locked up for 15 years as revenge from some guy (sort of prison but not). At the end of the 15 years he is set free and he tries to piece back together his life with some twisted discoveries!!!

THE MACHINIST - first Christian Bale looks really ill for this film, this is method acting too far. But the story reveals someone who hasn't slept for a year and basically hallucinates some parts of his life. Can't reveal any more because of spoiler alert.

Twisted films so made me think, I love a film that keeps me thinking but what films have you watched you thought you would make you think but turned out more twisted than you thought???

Try the original version of 'The Vanishing' - the MOST downbeat ending ever that will keep you thinking about it for days!! Ignore the ridiculous US remake at all costs!!

'Ichi The Killer' is another cracker too... and 'Audition'. Both movies from the master of twisted, demented movies, Takashi Miike. 'Audition' in particular lulls you into a false sense of comfort until it punches you in the stomach in the last 30 minutes... and just keeps on punching!

And if you wanted really twisted, try "The Happiness Of The Katakuris". A musical, romantic comedy about a family run bed and breakfast (the less said, the better :-))

You know, the moment I was the thread title, I knew Oldboy was going to be mentioned...! I bought the soundtrack as well as the DVD since the music is really, really neat. The trumpet solo during the fight scene and the use of Vivialdi's Winter during the torture scenes really added to the atmosphere.

Chan-Wook Park's other films are also twisted, though to lesser degrees than Oldboy. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is violent, creepy, and as good of a tragedy story as any (it has Hamlet-esque revenge strains that are both ironic and terribly sad). Lady Vengeance is (slightly) less twisted than the other two on the surface, but has many excellent "moments" and subtly disturbing questions that go unanswered (if you get around to watching it, who is Jenny's father?)

The vengeance trilogy is probably up there in my favorite films.

Though much, much less twisted than the above movies, I found Coraline to be rather disturbing. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when watching it for the first time, so when it got creepy, it got very creepy...!

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

The Machinist was, or so I thought, a really good movie.

I think you would like Barton Fink. It starts off pretty normal but just slowly becomes weirder and creepier.

I found Taxi Driver to be a very twisted and creepy movie. It fits into the same Machinist kind of vibe and is just such a good movie.

I know there are others but I can't think of any right now. If you're in the mood to be really depressed A Clockwork Orange is beyond twisted.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I'm not sure I can even bring myself to post this having sat through this particular flick this afternoon.

'A Serbian Film' is without doubt the sickest movie I have ever sat through. I don't want to come over all 'Daily Mail' but I am struggling to see any merits at all in it. Every taboo is busted (and quite a few I'm sure were made up for the film!) and I've been left feeling quite repulsed... and no film has ever done that for me before.

Approach with *extreme* caution. Or, as one reviewer put it: "You don't want to see this film, you just think you do"

They're not your friends! :-)

Now I've had an evening to recover from it, I'm still not sure what to make of it. It's a well-made movie, decent production values, etc... and I'm sure the writer and director had a message they were trying to convey.
But... well.. I just can't get certain scenes out of my head - and not in a good way!! Found the wikipedia entry which gives a synopsis of the movie too, if you can't bear to watch it - beware though, there are huge spoilers in the article and it's not much easier to stomach than watching the darn thing!

Wiki wrote:It tells the story of a down-on-his-luck porn star who agrees to participate in an "art film", only to discover that he has been drafted into a snuff movie with pedophiliac and necrophiliac themes. The film stars Serbian actors Srđan Todorović and Sergej Trifunović. Upon its debut on the art film circuit, the film received substantial attention for its graphic depictions of pedophilia, rape, necrophilia, and incest.

I'm grossed out by that first paragraph!!

'tis true.... I kept watching for a couple of reasons:

1) I don't like to give up on any type of art - if someone has taken the time to create it, then I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and, at least, give them my time to try and appreciate it.

2) I kept thinking that, at some point, the message behind it would become clear. But the film contains such savagely depraved imagery that your mind is kept constantly engaged (or grossed out!)... it's not til afterwards that you get a sense of the metaphors the director was aiming for - but, by then, it's too late!

Safe to say, ASF won't be making it's way onto BBC1 anytime soon.

Loved Martyrs!! That was a film that totally transcended itself right in the last few minutes - turned from a hideously violent horror film into a balanced treatise on a much deeper subject!!

That's a movie I can watch again... ASF? I'm not so sure! :)

I saw that a while ago (I'm a big Skarsgard fan) but it didn't last long in my mind - oddly enough, "A Serbian Film" appeared to have much better production values than WAZ! (Or however you're supposed to say it!) :-) Although WAZ did have Tom Hardy in it.... and it gets extra points for that!
