The Brain Box from Smoke and Mirrors

Postby Johnny Wizz » Sep 7th, '10, 19:24

The Effect

I am posting this seperate to the Benedict Box review because I believe these to be different products.

Quite simply this is a box in which you can change cards, predictions, billets etc etc

Cost

I paid £80 because I bought this on a pre launch offer, I believe full price will be £100

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Not really applicable. If you talk purely using it then its a 1 but this prop is for effects that are sold by their performance.

Review

I saw the offer for this on Facebook and after a few messages back and forth with Evie placed my order.

What I received is a beautifully hand made wooden box with a devilishly simple but totally foolproof mechanism. Also with the box comes a detailed set of instructions and tips. (I also received a free effect because the order was a little late arriving!!).

There isn't much more you can say about the item, it does what it says on the tin and does it very well. I have only used cards in it so far but have a banknote prediction lined up for it.

What I do want to emphasise is the quality of the item. Getting your hands on something made by hand where the joints are all perfect and the finish is just right is nigh on impossible these days except for silly money. This is however a real bargain item at top dollar quality.

I know that Smoke and Mirrors and our Evie have some more stuff in the pipeline and I can't wait to see it.

Value

10/10

Having seen the 'Happy Families' box in action a few months ago I can confirm that the finish is superb and the method as sweet as anything. The price reflects the work involved and will hopefully mean no silly kids on youtube having a rant :D !

:D

What I said, in the wrong place  , was:

Having just received one of these (see photos 22 and 23 on the Facebookj link) I'm honoured to pay tribute to the work involved in producing the boxes, Hand built props are not very common and good hand built props even rarer so hearty congratulations are in order. As an amateur woodworker myself, I can see that there's a lot of work in the finish and not just one swift coat of woodstain, it looks, and smells, like an old and well loved item, exactly the sort of thing I'd expect to find on Grandma's sideboard containing little mementoes of family activities and accomplishments, a baby's first milk tooth, perhaps a locket or part of a broken bracelet bought for her by a son or daughter, a lock of hair and maybe a photo of the young man she loved but who went to war and never returned. All that and more in a small box. And then there's all the effects and reveals possible, it may be trite but the uses of these boxes are really limited only by your imagination.

Generally speaking, any reviews need to be here in full and by the author rather than copied and pasted etc. However, clicking that link gives:

How about asking the author to repost here :D ?

Hi folks,

I am back and - yes! - I am the proud owner of one of Evie's incredible Brain Boxes. I have nothing but praise for the the prop itself and the beyond exceptional service I received from Evie. Mine was a custom box and needed to look a bit evil. It looks fabulous (and is probably cursed due to the occult symbols carved onto it - ask Evie for the full story of the boz of evil). I am sure she has sprinkled some of Crowley's ashes into it!

Anyway, it works like a dream, looks just like an old box should and is so far from a 'magic prop' aesthetically that it fits into my occult based performances perfectly.

For those that are interested, there is a full review of it in the next issue of The Mystic Menagerie, due very soon, and my own Spirit Writing routine for the box.

If you're after a change box, you won't find better - quality or price wise.

I had a big gig on Saturday, an office party / dinner and I did a bank note serial number prediction as my finale.

My brain box worked like a dream and I had many comments and questions about how I had known that the four numbers, written on coloured slips by 12 different people, would add up to the serial number.

I told people to ask Derren Brown!

The Brain Box is one of the best investments I have made in magic and once again it has done the business for me.

Nice one Evie!
