When did this problem start occurring? Was it after installing Win7 or did it work OK for a while after that and the problem has just reared up?

I've never had to check this before. I have always had decent speeds until a couple of months ago. I had to escalate my complaint to high level and they set me running netstat -b and tracert. He then came back to me and said because my first hop is so high he cannot conduct further tests ujntil I sort it out my end.

Nothing is running that can saturate bandwidth. Netstat showed nothing hogging. I'm confused and really frustrated

OK -so that sounds like it's been working OK in Win 7 before now and something else has changed to cause your problems.

The variable ping time might indicate a dodgy connection - have you tried a different cable? The problem with troubleshooting is that we need to narow down where the problem lies.

I have changed the cable yes. The router is a new router tested by them and sent to me a few days ago and flashed with latest firmware

OK - so has this machine been working OK before now?

If so - has anything changed in the computer (software updates, etc) between the times it was working OK and the problems started showing up?

If not - we might assume that the PC isn't the cause of the problem. To confirm this, it would be really useful if you could get a friend to bring a laptop around and plug in to the router. If they don't get the problem, then you know it's your PC, if not we can assume it's the router or something else...

Sorry, I know I'm not being much help - but if you're tried everything I've suggested, we need to try and narrow things down as much as possible.

You also might want to check your duplex setting (this was mentioned before but just incase...) I have seen problem in the past with when the link setting for Duplex mode are set to “Auto”. Probably best to define those settings and see if it improves performance.

These settings can be found in the properties of your network card - go via Device Manager

Also try a ping -t to your default gateway to see just how variable the responses are over a longer period.

it was on auto and I changed to 1gbps full duplex and it brought it down to 24ms then second test it was up at 40 something again.

Ping -t is showing no longer than =1ms to gateway 192.168.1.254

and what's the tracert showing to your local gateway? (or is that the fluctuating figure?)

Also - check what the settings that the router has for its duplex config - make sure they match the network card settings.

PM sent......

If pinging your gateway doesn’t yield any issues, then the delay is likely being injected on your DSL/Cable modem connection to your router, or between the Modem and the Carrier’s equipment.

Final test….
Remove the router and plug Ethernet directly into the Cable Modem/DSL Modem…. If you can ping the Default gateway you get when you’re connected in that fashion and there are no issues, then you can prove without a doubt it’s your carriers issue…assuming you still have the latency issue when you Ping say bing.com.

If you no longer see the delay, than it’s likely to be your router injecting the delay… and you should upgrade your Firmware or throw it out!!
