Norman Wisdom

Postby daleshrimpton » Oct 5th, '10, 08:45

It was announced today that Norman Wisdom has passed away.

One of his early sucesses, was playing stooge to a suave , debonare magician by the name of David Nixon.
Whilst this act isnt on film as far as i know, Its worth looking at the man in front of a live audience, as in my oppinion this was the envioroment that suited him best.

here is part one of an interview by the late Bob Monkhouse, which showcases his timing to perfection...

also worth watching some of the other clips, featuring cooper, cook,ect....

enjoy

Very sad news indeed.

I'd also recommend Tony Hawks' book "One Hit Wonderland" for a wonderfully surreal extended slice of Norman-realted hilarity!

In Albania, his films were the only western movies allowed to be shown during Hoxha's dictatorship and he consequently became a national hero; Hawks uses this to his advantage in one particular chapter of the book.

Think I'll watch 'Trouble In Store' as a tribute...

I was taking a shortcut through Soho about 12 years ago and Norman was chatting in the doorway of a pub looking *exactly* like I remember him from the telly when I was a kid. Sad news.

In the good old days, when i was an iron monger A regular customer of mine was a grand old style Indian gentleman.. by that i mean he was a top hole, queen and country regimantal chap, with a taste for Johnnie walker black label whisky, and had a fantastic way of being racist, without being offencive.. I loved having him in the shop.. such a nice guy...
Anyway, he was Wisdoms best friend, and used to stay with him in the summer in his spanish style villa on the isle of man.
and while he was there, he would help build props for Normans caberet act.

I cant recall one single story that he told us, as it was quite a few years ago.. but i do recall laughing till my cheeks were soaking wet.

I felt through the storys, that i had met the man.. even though i hadnt.

No one seems to have a bad word to say about him, which tells you a lot. An extremely talented comedian, actor and musician (with other skills besides), but most importantly of all, a gentleman with a great fondness for life and people.

Try not to trip over any clouds while you're on the way up, Norman. :)

Indeed this is very sad news indeed. Norman was one of the cornerstones of TV when I was growing up. A truly funny guy.

just after Albania went bankrupt and everyone started shooting each other (they stole all the army's weaponry) I spent 6 months running a kids program in Bathore, a slum on the edge of the capital.
I'd say at lest 1 in 5 bars was called the Norman Wisdom bar, and every single bar had at lest one photo of him.
An amazing man, sorely missed
