I dont think there is a flaw. The box isnt needed at all. Simply allow the mirror to drop down in your hands to horizontal to the ground ish...

Basically the reset is based on a tilt. ie, tilt it close to flat it resets. The book was just there is as a stand.

I will second Ian's thoughts about the black mirror... go to an occult shop of check out scrying mirrors on line, they are black, typically concave with a frame that contains various sigils and magickle markings. While I couldn't find an example of this style on line, here are some resources for commercial examples that may give you some ideas;
