24th July: Magic Circle Workshop

Postby panther1004 » Jul 26th, '04, 10:40

I arrived at the magic circle at about 10:45 or so.
You check in then sit down (each chair has the name of a magician on it!) and show each other tricks. Its not infront of loads of people on a stage, just in little groups or two people. Its a great atmospear. I showed people "Graffeti by Jay Sankey", "Joker Joker", Simple Card forcing tricks with good revelances at the end (hehe my own creations, surprizing how it fools so many people!)

After about 30 mins of showing tricks and stuff, we go upstairs to the "Devant" room. (A room intribute to David Devant).

Its time for the first lecture. It is Alan Shaxon on stacked decks in magic. He starts off by telling us how versatile stacks are, and lots of different types. This lecture (workshop really) concentrates on the Si Stebbins stack. After frantically sorting on stacking our decks, without tables :!: Alan starts off by showing us the basics. After that he shows us some really amazing stuff, from Book Tests with stacked packs, to Great Mind reading effects.

He also goes brefilely into Deck Switching, and ways this can be used to a good effect with stacked packs.

He then anwsers some questions before showing off, and it was really quite amazing really. He didnt tell us what stack he used, but claimed to have been using it for 20 or so years. Any card was named and he spellt it out from the top and it was there! Another card named was reversed in the deck, and when some smart guy called out "Joker!", Alan counted J-O-K-E-R from the top and there it was.

After this we went back down stairs for lunch. Where once again we showed tricks to each other. (Oh and people were very intrested in my black tigers as only a few people had them, hehe) I mainly did some balloon moddeling, with some fellow moddelers (Mandy Davis was there, always is, so I did some moddeling with her and some other people. I had my own 260's so I was ok :D)

After lunch, it was back upstairs to the Devant room for a really good Lecture. It was Richard Stupple on Kids Shows. He was a great guy and told us, what tricks were right to perform, funny things to say, what to do if a kid goes wild, great patter lines, and he showed us some of the things he does in kids shows. Then some YMC members came up and did some of their magic that they do in kids shows, and we then gave them some constructive critisism and tips after they had performed.

Unfortunaly then it was time to go. All in all it was a great day. :D
