I have two bits I did years ago that took on an MD type theme but were nothing less than slap-stick comedy taken to an extreme. In the original version I used a trained assistant (stooge) and the table to a Buzz Saw system I no longer owned (the saw part that is)... needless to say, when someone is in the position in question, it's easy to set in a load of quantitative size directly over the gut. While cool and effective it was an impractical path and my realization of this lead to the bit I'd still be doing if I were doing a traditional magic type program.
I used a legit couple from the audience that wasn't in on anything, along with two trained helpers on stage. The other key elements were appropriate medical outfits for everyone on stage including our victim. The set-up is of course, a spin on the old Sawing in Half idea... in this case, the female element of the couple apparently saws her boy friend in half.
You could use a Spectator Sawing such as the Harbin Bow Saw or similar piece. We used the old U.F. Grant Jig Saw apparatus which is composed of a frame that fits over the victim and a Black & Decker "scroll" saw type device with a very large, real and moving blade.
You place victim on table, lock him in with the stocks and proceed with the cutting... if you work things out properly there are tons of side bits that can be done here, especially when you have the "other half" of the couple take command of the saw (it's a very convincing bit of play btw... those familiar with this prop will understand why). Needless to say, I don't trigger the blood squirters until I have said partner at the helm; their expression when the blood starts flowing (very exaggerated gushers that shoot up from the frame/stocks)... well, it's priceless!
Once all of the cutting is done we moved into the "production routine"... that is to say we started pulling out red Jello ridden items such as rubber chickens, linked sausages, car plates and a long list of other gag items. It is important to have some well rehearsed lines to go with whatever it is your produce and of course, plan out how to end said segment and restore you "patient".
This is a wonderful routine that can give you loads of time on stage and of course, it packs very small and plays HUGE, provide you have the sort of personality that is needed for the dark humor aspects in the routine. But that's all up to you, I've just offered you some food for thought...
