stand up deck switch

Postby jackleg » Dec 12th, '10, 16:30

Hi all,
Long story very short I'm looking for alternatives to perform a deck switch whilst standing up. I currenty use a toppit and a convenient inside jacket pocket but I was wondering if anyone knew of another delivery device (I'm quite happy with the toppit but always on the lookout for alternatives there too)
I wear a jacket but I sometimes roll my sleves back.
Cheers in advance
:D

It would be helpful to know where you have available to ditch the 1st pack and also where you can get the 2nd pack from.

Custom R&S decks made to specification - PM me for details

Are you trying to start the trick with one deck and finish with another or ditching during/after one trick and ringing in for the next?

well as I mentioned, at the moment I'm just ditching the deck in a toppit and pulling a fresh deck out from an inside pocket and to mask all of this I'm moving from in front of my performance table to behind it (so I have my back to the audience briefly) (It's parlour magic BTW) I'm just not comfortable with it and was lookng for a cleaner way perhaps without having to turn my back on folks, hope this helps and thanks everyone for all our suggestions so far

hi robb,
I start by giving a deck out to be shuffled etc then ask for it back and whilst moving round the table I do the switch for the new (one way) deck. hope that helps

Using the sleeve of your jacket? By dropping the second deck from your inside pocket into the sleeve, it allows you to work with the first deck, then after throwing it into the topit, relaxing your arm drops the second deck right into your hand? That's assuming you ask the person to rebox the deck?

Sorry but I disagree, not every layman shuffles the same way and all it takes is for them to drop even one card or do a fancy shuffle to make that deck useless, or even just look through the deck before shuffling.

If your just using the shuffle as a convincer that the deck is normal, start by doing a different trick with the normal deck and allow them to shuffle it. Then once the trick is done and the heat is off, do the switch.

However I still would like to hear more ideas on this, as I'm working on a card trick where the most simple way to do it involves a deck switch when the cards are reasonably 'hot' so my normal pocket switch is no good.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Not really for standing, but interesting and possibly usable (if you've got the kahonas to put it to work!)... Daniel Madison's OTT Deck Switch from Subterfuge One

The way I approach this problem is to perform a trick that involves the deck going into a pocket, for example, 'Ace In Pocket' Dawin Ortiz, or there's that one [name escapes me] where the whole deck goes to the pocket and you're left with one (spec's selection) card.

I have a second deck (to be switched-in) in my right outside pocket. Also in the pocket, is a piece of cardboard to prevent the two decks being mixed up.

Using this approach, part of my card act consists of:

i) Trick where spec's get to handle/ shuffle deck
ii) 'Ace In Pocket' (switch in Stebbins deck)
iii) Do As I Did (mentalism effect from 'At The Card Table', Ortiz).

All of this can be done stood up and totally surrounded.
