SPIKE! ( Spike Under Cup )

Postby Danny Joseph » Dec 18th, '10, 14:46

Hey there everyone,

In the topic I mentioned a great effect, controversial as it is.

I would really like to perform SPIKE in public places, but there are two obvious problems:

1) Because SPIKE! would I'm sure be considered a lethal weapon
2) Because I would be terrified myself of the dangers the trick obviously holds.

Is there a version of SPIKE! which has a built-in fold-in blade in case the trick is ever wrong? this should solve both problems.

Hi - does it have to be a spike? I perform using the Scorpion from Outlaw Effects - which I personally believe offers far more interesting storylines, and can actually be handled by the spectator (under control though). I also have my own 100% safe routine, which replaces the usual "jewellery" with "stationary" (hope that's not too cryptic) for a kicker ending.

Take a look at Five of Heart's / Wayne Dobson's version called Smash & Stab. No 'Jewelry' needed.

I am having visions of the guy who did this on TV and stabbed his hand... who was he?

I don't know who stabbed his own hand.. but I've seen someone stab the SPECTATOR's hand.. Few Rumours say that Keith Barry has also done this, but I had no comfirmation on that.

Cannot seem to find this available to purchase - anyone give me a few pointers to a book or shop online i can buy this at?

Side note - didnt Derren Brown do a glorified version of this by stamping on paper cups?

Derren had somebody else do it all... and replaced the spike/knife with a mouse

Derren has also performed a similar type of effect using aerosol cans sprayed into the eye. I believe the creator of this effect is Roni Shachnaey.

The SPIKE! Routine is completely safe and physical in operation. I do a Roulette Routine without any mechanic's using Kockov's Method from 'Plunge of Death'. It really is more of a stage effect, because you can control the pacing and tension much more efficiently.
The Spray Can roulette version is very clever, but a little expensive unless it was for stage shows. We don't all have Derren's budget :p It can easil be worked on with your own method though if you know enough about Chair Test's or Roulette Routines.

P.S - It was Chris Korn who cut his hand open, the clip is on YouTube somewhere with Paul Wilson in the background who if I recall, doesn't flinch at all!

GypsyFish (You a beardyman fan btw?) Do you know where I can buy a set which can replace a egg for a spike? obviously a set that relies on `jewellery ` wouldn't work.

You could use Kockov's method from 'Plunge of Death' but replace the nail with the egg. Another way would be to use 'Just Chance' from Inner Mind Production or Just Chintz from 'Nothing' by Max Maven. None of the above need jewelry.

Don't know beardyman, but I like his posts.

Thanks for the advice everyone :) I quite like the egg idea, since I know I won't be doing it wrong I can have it hard-boiled anyway..

GyspyFish: The reason why I asked if you know `beardyman` is because he is a famous beat-boxer who had a segment on `GyspyFish` lol.

Check it out, even just the first 5 minutes, well worth it (don't be fooled by the apparent `mindless shouting` at start, it's all an act lol.)

Surely you'll want to demonstrate it breaking after the selections, though? In which case you'll need a raw one.

I never understood the whold egg thing? Surely the whole point would be that there is 'danger' involved?

What skill is avoiding an egg demonstrating? To me it just seems a little Chicken....

...I'm proud of that one
