Lazy magician-type effects

Postby pcwells » Dec 22nd, '10, 11:52

Hi all!

I'm looking for some good, reliable lazy-magician type effects.

They must be:

Completely hands-off from start to finish.

Foolproof - if it's a card trick, it shouldn't matter if the spectator gives the deck a shuffle.

Anyone have any favourites that they can recommend?

EDIT: I should add that I'm not specifically after card tricks. Any and all completely hands-off magical feats are of interest to me!

Thanks again,

Pete

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this effect. I'll describe it in brief and perhaps somebody can name it.

Can use a borrowed deck, Spectator cuts shuffles does whatever and cuts the deck into 5 piles. You can be in a seperate room, blindfolded with your eyes torn out by a rogue parrot. Spectator turns the top card of each pile over. They remember the highest card, (aces being high) then they turn the cards back over, assemble the deck shuffle, cut whatever (doesn't matter)

End result, you pick up the deck, remove 5 cards face down. Your hand hovers over one of the card. Spectator names the card. 10 of diamonds, (for arguments sake) you lower your hand and turn over the card. It is the 10 of diamonds! Turn over the other four cards and they are the Jack, Queen, King and Ace of Diamonds.

It is a little nerve wracking because you don't know the name of the card until the very end when it is named. (and yes, it is easy to get wrong).

I can't even remember who created it. But he had a series of effects out there in manuscript form. One was Deja Voodoo. (a great effect). If I can remember who it was I'll re post.

EDIT: This is a Bob Farmer effect and I believe it is called Tsunami.

My favourite is Topsy Turvey Cards

Spec shiffles, cuts into three piles, selects a pile, shuffles that pile, looks at top card, reverses the pile before sandwiching between the other two piles and then riffle shuffles.

You immediately find their card.

Not only do they do all of the work but when you find their card immediately (I use the hot shot cut) it looks impossible yet it's so easy to do.

My favourite is Spectator Magician.

The spec shuffles the cards, you take one and then the spec finds your card.

They handle the deck you never touch it...

Impossible by Larry Jennings is a cracking self worker card effect where after a card is picked and lost in the deck the spec counts out the word 'impossible' with the chosen card being the last card dealt.

No set up and with a borrowed deck

'Do As I Do' from Royal Road.

2 decks shuffled at the start, 1 by you and 1 by the participant and then you swap, choose a card and then return them to the top and cut a few times (the spectator copying you). You then swap the deck with each other again and retrieve your card from the deck and put it on the table face down. With a little build up, you reveal them and they are the same.

'Mentalivity' also from Royal Road.

Participant A watches you show the cards from 1 to 10 and remembers one of them and it's position. You then put the cards under the table making some reasonable excuse (or disturbing faces/noises if you are Paul Wilson). Card back above the table, you ask for Participant B to give a number between 11 and 20. You count to where Participant A's card should be and it is gone. You then count to Participant B's number and the card seems to have reappeared at this number.

If you think about it, any Add a number effect can be looked upon as a lazy magician effect. The basis of my Synchronist act, is audience as magician. in the action of passing a billet from spectator a, to spectator b, you gain the info.. then force said info somehow on spectator b, so they can reveal it.. all you are is the go between... or force an item on a, then force the info onto b. you get the basic idea.

you simply have to take the heat off of the magician at the right moment. Something easy to do since strictly speaking a, and b are doing the effect.

you tell the spectator that you have turned a card over in the deck of cards on the table....... yoou hand them another deck..... they turn over any card...... you spread their deck..... the card reversed is seen..... you show your deck... and they have read your mind, and the cards matched.

I.D... And an ordinary deck.

Simples.

what are magicians doing handling billets?!

call the mentalism-police!

 :)

i have a full on confabulation type routine that is entirely self-working, well except for the add-a-number right at the very start...but thats no big deal...

all about how making one choice can influence every other decision you'll ever make in life...

This is an incredible effect, it is also taught by Micheal Ammar on one of his tapes.

If you can track it down, Simon Aronson's 'Shuffle Bored' ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1986.php ) takes place in the spec's hands and despite lots of sloppy shuffling, the outcome is preordained!
