Creating a uni magic society

Postby theycallmesuperman » Jan 22nd, '11, 00:32

hey people,

basically for university i want to start a magic society and i would appreciate some tips and pointers on things i should and should not do.

The general aim of the society is to help magicians showcase their talent by doing shows twice a semester. And to give them a place to showcase their talents to other magicians for feed back and tips on how to improve.

Also the society provides a good place for people who enjoy magic to come to the shows and watch.

so any advice is welcome

Also i dont want the society to sound like it is just for magicians, because i need a minimum of 20 members, so any advertising tips would also be appreciated

Why not start a performers society?

Magicians, jugglers, poi, street musicians, comedians etc.

This will increase your membership and will mean you can put on a show with greater variety.

I wasn't suggesting that as the name, just the principle.

I'm sure you are capable of inventing an effecting name. If it is the name that is stopping you, then good luck when the hard work starts.

Easy. Freshers' week (or whatever) big sign "learn how to do david blaine/derren brown/paul daniels tricks. And immediately become a sexual magnet". Only £5, meet every wednesday at 13.00 next to the chess club.

They'll flock. If you get enough members you'll get a grant from the student union (probably) and the world is your mollusc.

Seconded.
I set up a stand for a magic society at our freshers fair one year. 1 person (other than me) joined. As I was running the juggling soc at the same time we just joined the 2. Got some great gigs out of it too; strolling magic and juggling at hip hop clubs was actually a lot better than it probably sounds.

I've joined the magic society at my uni. There is only about 4 or 5 of us that turn up. Though not a great deal goes on. We learn some slights and flourishes with cards and coins.
I was hoping for a bit more, like picking up a book and working from front to back. Or a bit more variety, like sponge balls, cups and balls, etc.

They got me at the freshers fair. But since I was very intrested in magic anyway, I didn't really see what they were going with to try get people to join.

I might have to bring up juggling with them, or see if there is a jugglers society.

This is a great idea. If you want to consider the other option of learning magic and promote it in a way suggested earlier you need to think about what and how you will teach

Would you have twi meeting or one meeting with two elements i.e. beginners and the more advanced.

firstly i only know how to do card magic, and i have 3 books on the topic. so i dont know what id do about someone asking for help with juggling, and i have no variety lol

i was thinking of meeting once every 2 weeks for performers to show their talent to other people who are 'in the trade' and then get feedback and stuff.

i dont really want to show people how to do the magic, because im pretty sure most people just come for the reveal as opposed to the actual doing of the trick. however if someone did want to learn magic i would recommend royal road to card magic, and then attempt to help them from that book.
