Easy tricks made Amazing

Postby vertigoproductions » Jan 24th, '11, 17:22

Hey guyz,

So i've been going around the street, to friends, family etc and showing them a routine i made in less than 1 day.

I seem to get amazing reactions with some very, very basic tricks that are practically self-working.
Please check out the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-R2qKMkHHk

Regards,
Charlie

It's very nice, are you looking for feedback?

Cheers for showing us your video.

I suggest you add a simple false shuffle at the beginning so that it looks like you haven't set the deck up. It is currently suspect without it.

Another suggestion is to zoom your camera out as it's hard to know what is going on off camera and it is suspicious when the cards go off screen. It also makes it hard for you to do slights without giving the game away.

Lastly, you need patter. You need to explain why you are doing things. Some of it seemed to lack a reason. For instance, why was the 6 up right? Tell the participant a reason and your routine will be a lot stronger. The patter will also make them more excited over each revelation you show them and as a result, it buys you more time to prepare for the next part of the trick as they need time to recover mentally and it make the trick far more entertaining overall.

Thanks david,

I have a few problems:

1) Im waiting to get a tripod so at the moment i have to balance the camera or my iphone above my desk or such.

2) Im 15 and my voice still hasnt fully broken so it kinda sounds wierd when i talk... not the best for a video ;)

3) I'll take the false shuffle into mind and try and have some more videos up soon, though im making this magic channel:

http://www.youtube.com/themagicstation1
(it hasnt been released yet) but sub if you like the current members + magic news wire will be uploading their podcasts, i'll be doing a seperate thread to it though with all the info on the channel on the release date...

To be honest it was pretty boring, mostly due to lack of patter. Without it the tricks seem fairly aimless and as said before is very obvious that the deck has been prearranged.

got to agree with Tim, it was close up magic mixed with cabaret, and I felt like i was sitting at the back of the hall, its hard to keep up, to know whats going on at anyone time, you really do need to add patter, oh and be careful towards the end something was happening (cant say what because of a reveal) and the SNAP was very very loud. That however could have bee covered up with talking, so add some patter and it will be great for a first atempt, I still remember my first attempt, it was a run through of THIS THAT and OTHER :-).

But other than no patter, good first attempt, hang on in there.

It is pretty good for a first attempt and obviously pretty much everything will have to be worked on, but that's just about developing your experience and skill, not much advice can be given other than keep practicing and keep studying.

The only bit of constructive advice I can give is you need to have a justification for the key card (the upside down card, I think it was the six of hearts) right now it just feels out of place.

Also it needs a climax the key element that makes a good card trick is surprise, something unexpected. I also think you should start with the ending (the riffle force) to get the four aces.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

With the face up key card is this the trick from Mark Wilson's? By having a 6 it doesnt make sense as you only count down five cards rather than six. In his description he uses a 5 and that is the indication of how many cards away it is. Of course you could use a six as long as you change their selected card to that position. However five does work better as it allows you to have the 4 aces in between. It makes more sense than just having a random key card.
