As David mentioned Tabbary.. Ive seen him do his rope act live, 3 or 4 times. In fact i seem to recall seing him do it, the first time ever in the uk.
The problem with his routine, which was Groundbreaking stuff, is that i have also seen it done 100s of times by people who copy the act so much, they do it with a french accent.

and they have to, because of the way Its timed on his dvds. "Like so"

Sanders left me cold.

My best Pall Darren James, he does a good rope routine. One that i have seen hundreds of times, because i helped with the presentation.
He knows that If i never saw it again, it wouldnt be the worst thing to happen.. but its short, and sweet, and I can watch it.

In Fact i will have to see it at least once in th enext month at south shields. ( I also believe hes doing it at the Circle some time soon)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Well, I like ropes, alongside other things too.

Best routine I've seen...

which I really need to work on (thanks for reminding me, I'll add it to the bottom of the other million things to work on!)

...was a ring and rope by Alex De Cova - like people said, very visual, few phases, uses just a ring and a rope.

Hate the hack magicians who rip off gags and lines eg. professors nightmare - this one is as long as my leg, this one is as long as my arm...
next magician I see doing that is getting a serious verbal bashing from me - you have been warned.

I like a simple cut and restored rope effect. I alos like a well performed Professer's nightmare. I have used that one when discussing classical philosophy but that is another story.

Interesting this thread came up today as magic has suffered another great loss. Pavel (of rope magic fame) a brilliant magician lost his battle with cancer today.

I've been using Hunter's Impossible Knot as my party piece / ice breaker for well over 40 years. It's the perfect pocket trick; you can show it over and over again, from any angle, and they'll never be able to copy you. It particularly upsets mathematicians because they know it's impossible.

The other effective routine I use is a rope & ring thing called "There's a Hole in the Rope". I bought it from Davenports many years ago; Pat Page demonstrated it to me but the instructions are uncredited, so I'm not sure who came up with it. Karl Fulves credits part of it to J W Sarles. I've done a video of the first two phases at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN3Xt4x2YNE

I am not a fan of the Tabary Rope Routine. Too long and convoluted. Spectators can't follow the effect. I am a great fan of Malini's advice, "Cut and restore the rope once-that's enough!"
I do tempt fate by cutting and restoring it twice and I hope Malini forgives me but that really is as far as I dare to go. You can have far too much of a good thing.
