The Illusionist again

Postby Nic Castle » Feb 12th, '11, 20:50

The Illusionist is on tv again this week. It is on ITV2 tomorrow and Thursday at some silly time in the morning.

I have to say I do enjoy watching it so I have put it on to record.

Ive seen this a couple of times and quite liked it. I have the Prestige on DVD but not this one, so I'll be recording it aswell.
I have one little gripe about the film though - the Orange Tree - bloody digital effects. When I first saw this advertised a small flash of the effect was shown on the advert. I was really looking forward to seeing it performed. But no, it wasnt the REAL Orange Tree, it was digital, very dissapointed.
Good film though :)

I have just watched this and absolutely loved it. Being a newbie to magic, I was watching it more from a laymans point of view and didn't have a clue about any of the tricks, just thoroughly enjoyed it as a film.

I do like The Illusionist and its homages to Robert-Houdin but I much prefer The Prestige - I honestly believe I catch more subtleties in the plot with every viewing, and its homages to so much of the golden age of magic are a delight. AND it's got Ricky Jay in it. :D

I prefer the Prestige more over the illusionist as I don't remember as much actual magic during the latter, just mostly visual effects. Prestige has some ok moments of sleight of hand going on from the main actors.

I have seen the Illusionist quite a few times and love it every time. Hopefully I will remember it is on tonight.
But I have not watched The Prestige. I will be popping into town soon, so will look out for it. Sounds like it will be a good film to have.

The Prestige is far superior. Not only was the orange tree done digitally (Paul Daniels found the budget for it back in the 80's so what's your beef Hollywood?), so was a floating card if I remember rightly. Surely an actual floating card would have been a whole lot cheaper - and far more believable to a lay audience.

Where would one find out how the floating card is done? I really liked that bit. Is this a really old uncopyrighted thing that someone can pm me how it's done, or is there a video/book/tutorial you could point me in the direction of?

It used C.G.I.

Historicaly an effect kind of like this was done, but its stage only.

Would I be right in guessing it involved IT and some interesting rigging above the stage?

Picked up The Prestige in HMV, 2 for £10. (No I didn't get two).

Were the oranges produced by Paul Daniels edible like the ones in The Illusionist?
