I seek opinions and advice on using a sound system.
In the past the performances I have done either had been at places where a sound system was available or where I didn't need electronic aids. So far the audience size has not exceeded 100 people, but I may have gigs in the future where the audience is larger or where the acoustics demand a sound system.
I have asked magician colleagues, here are some things that came up:
* Do I need a sound system?
In principle I shouldn't have to. I should learn to project my voice naturally. I have taken acting classes, but I am nowhere near a professional singer who can fill an opera house with just her voice.
* Being prepared?
As a mentalist who claims to predict the future I should better anticipate problems with the venue.
Having said that, I am afraid of running into a situation where clients are unaware of their venue's specifications and equipment.
* Headset or hand mike?
There were pros and cons with either choice. Personally, I really would prefer to have my hands free.
* Alteration of voice?
When using a sound system my delivery could be affected. Having rehearsed all the time without electronics and then switching for one show might weaken my delivery.
* Transportation?
So far, my act fits in a suitcase. In many cases I get to my gigs with public transport. Having huge speakers would force me to use a car, making every event more costly and complicated. Therefore, size really matters.
* Which system is right for me?
Right now I don't want/need/use music. If some systems are optimized for speech only, then going with them would limit my ability to add music in the future.
Advice on specific systems is appreciated, what works for whom etc.
