What's it called?

Postby Mark Waddington » Aug 22nd, '04, 16:46

Hey guys,

Im looking for an effect that i saw quite a while ago. Basically, the magi had a carton of orange juice, from which he poured a glass of orange. He then ask a member of the audience to call out an alcohlic drink out, and he poured that, from the same carton, then he asked for a fizzy drink, a dilute drink (squash in old money). He did this untill he had about 7 or 8 different drinks, which he handed out to the people who helped him, to verify that it was the drink that they named!

He then took the juice carton and ripped it up and gave it to my brother as a souvenir.

Now, i would like to know 2 things. A) whats it called (i think it was called any drink called for) and B) where can i buy one as i feel it would be quite good for my compere spots

Thanks in advance

Mark

I'm pretty sure that the name of the effect is "Hospitality." It was performed on national television (here in the states) by Lance Burton. I've searched all the major outlets that I have to find it, but no luck. I'm afraid that I don't know who the manufacturer is, but if you find out, that would be a good first step in finding out where you can purchase the effect.

I've worked as a sound man to a friend of mine who is a stage illusionist and he does this presentation. Quite effective with the right presentation and, if you do stage magic, probably worth the cost (which will undoubtedly be very high, as there is much more to this effect than just the juice carton).

there was also an effect like this on "monkey magic" where different drinks were called out and produced from a cows udder!!?!?!

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

This particular version of the any drink called for, is the brain child of Jim Steinmyer, and he has published it in Magic Mag. It also appears in one of his books, although at the moment i cant recall which one. The special table, and all the props are available to buy , however they cost quite a bit of money.
It may be a very good idea to Check Jim's web site, to see what this particular versions name is .

Update! After a bit of research, the following info......

The effect is called "Hospitality", and was published in Jim's book, Modern art, along with several other ideas, including the wonderfull zig- zag effect, "Modern Art."

And the award for "The Most Amazingly Knowledgeable Magician on the Face of the Earth" goes to Dale Shrimpton! :P

Also have a look at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/sutra5902.php#5902 - emagictricks aren't showing this item any more but it may be available elsewhere.

Then again, you could check out http://www.magic.co.uk/magic/MMS027.html which is a variation on the theme.

Scott Penrose wrote a book of his fathers magic, which contains a version of this effect using the magic colouring book. Its very nice indeed.
