couple of poundshop finds

Postby daleshrimpton » Feb 15th, '11, 19:39

picked up a couple of potentialy usefull bits in a pound shop today.
Fistly, a pack of 2 A4 sheets of magnetic photo printing paper.
You are supposed to use it to make fridge magnets, but i guess it could be used for other stuff.
Secondly a pack of 3 sheets of Velcro that you cut to shape and size. It might be handy stuff, to make hold outs with.. any other ideas?

If you get hold of Paul Stockman's Connected DVD there's a great routine for utilising these sheets.

There used to be a pound shop in my street, but it had to close down.

Someone opened a 99p shop down the road, and they couldn't compete.

Poundshops are magic shops.

Here's the challenge for you and your magic friends,
£5
20 minutes buying time.
1 hr devising time.
Best routine wins.

You can decide whether you allow other magical items or not, cards, TT, IT, etc, etc...

i could do this. for instance I know that the basic components of a well known imp device can be picked up in my local pound shop. Infact, you have to buy 2. :)

they started to charge for their carrier bags. Only a penny, or 2 for the larger one, but thats what they did.

OK, you've just walked into your local pound/dollar (or 99p/99c!) shop, which, for the picky ones out there is open 24/7  . So which items could you buy to use in your act and how could you use them? To start the ball rolling....

Cheap deck of cards to either use in giveaway effects or where cards are destroyed/stuck to the ceiling etc, possibly to stick on your backdrop or working table

Writing pads/envelopes/pens/pencils/marker pens – for use in zillions of mentalist/magic effects. The great thing here is that you could do John Archer’s Blank Night routine several times over using less than £3 worth of kit!

Strange looking boxes and other containers to hold cards, coins whatever and possibly might be gaffable.

Plastic fruit for final loads, juggling etc.

Small 'fridge magnets for PK effects

Razor blades for use as shims.
Any more thoughts?

99p stores are ideal sources for cutlery that responds perfectly to metal bending.

For 99p I have also purchased (for various effects);
-A full set of crayons
-A set of kitchen knives
-30 pencils (with sharpener)
-A4 sketch pads
-Padlocks

99p stores/Poundlands etc. are an Aladdin's Cave of resource.

I just wish my local "Works" had all the exciting magic books everyone else's seems to stock!

They certainly don't hang around very long! For what it's worth, there are three The Works within 10 miles or so of where I live and none of them have any magic books at the moment. They do have some nice old fashioned looking Agatha Christie books which would probably be very good in a book test......
