opening gag - security tag needed - help ASAP!

Postby ultimatecreate » Feb 23rd, '11, 00:01

hey guys,

im doing table hopping sat night and really need x2 clothes security tags (the kind that go off in stores when you try to steal clothes) as an opening gag; - "What do you think of my new jacket?" ...show the security tag... "got it on a great deal"

great ice breaker but anyone know how i can source these asap?

thanks,
alex

I saw a performer do this the other day using a price tag instead.I'd say it goes down the same way

Sounds just like Greg Wilsons opener!

Why not do some magic?

The bit sounds more like something the compere from Blackpool would do.

I think with table hopping you cannot introduce something (a prop) unless you are going to do magic with it.

So, if you really think the gag is funny (I don't, but different strokes etc), then have a think about what you could do with it magically. If you really were a magician, and really had nicked it, you'd want to make it disappear so you could wear the jacket. How could you do that?

Also, as a thought, if other patrons in the restaurant look over and see your back, and see the security things, what do you think they will think?

I think it was Skinner who would just chat to the customers, welcome them, hope they have a great meal etc and not always do magic. He was charming, welcoming and personable. I always liked that idea rather than a TA DAH! I AM A MAGICIAN! approach...

Agree with Screwy!

You're not doing a comedy stage act, you are doing close up as a professional entertainer!

Greg Wilsons entire stage act is about stealing and theft etc, I believe his show is even called 'so funny its criminal', so this would work for him in a stage show based on the theme!

Try and be original and not follow other peoples styles! As the saying goes, 'Be a leader not a follower'!

Impossible is nothing, if you only believe!

i seem to recall that the tag thing is a dealer item. It may even be something that Greg sold at his lectures.

Its definatly not his, and his alone.

The magic thing about shop security tags is that if a thief (or magician) tries to take them off the garment loads and loads and loads, an endless amount of purple die suddenly comes out and goes all over everything.

It would be spectacular if you were wearing an expensive looking white suit, but not very repeatable. It might even get on the clothes and ruin the clothes of some spectators sitting nearby as well. It might get a laugh, but also might also get you stabbed.

I would suggest it is better to make a dummy security tag - something that looks just like one but isn't. I would make up something in the same shape and then take a plaster cast of it and paint the plaster cast to look like white plastic.

nah. you fill half a ping pong ball with plasticene, then atatch it to the jacket with velcro, or a couple of magnets

Or instead of spending any money you could just nip down Oxford Street and steal a suit from a shop.

I've seen plenty of people do this gag, with or without reason to. Do yourself a favour - do something else, or don't do it all.
