It's both.
The fushigi balls are of a poor quality and prone to breaking a hell of a lot easier than your standard acrylic ball. They also (i've found) have a bit of a weight problem; while that bit in the middle might look nice it just seems to throw the centre of balance off to a point that feels uncomfortable to work with.
There is then the marketting issue; fushigi have come along making no reference to contact juggling and gone "hey, look, this is mega awesome extreme fushigi action, you can do it right out of the box with this magic fushigi ball!....... it's FUSHIGI!!!" while failing to mention that the people in the videos have been contact juggling for years. You cannot do this right out of the box, you can spend a few years (seriously) practising and THEN you can do it. And if anyone tells you otherwise then they're liarshigis!
Youtube "bananashigi" for a good giggle
If you're interested in learning I'd say the best advice is to get along to your local juggling group or convention and get some one to one tuition. Convention listings are usually best found on
www.jugglingdb.com
And don't buy an acrylic ball to learn with, they're expensive and a few drops with tarnish them beyond performance quality; buy a stage ball (£4/£5) instead!
I should have this all saved as a template somewhere really
