Science Shows

Postby TonyB » Mar 19th, '11, 19:48

Since Christmas more than half the birthday parties I have been booked for have requested a science show rather than a magic show. Today a venue asked me could I do a series of science shows. There is a market out there.

A few years ago a UK magician told me about someone who does lectures on kids science shows. Has anyone encountered this lecture? I would love to find out more, and maybe buy the lecture notes. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Tony

Probably not much help but Ellis Stanyon published 2 volumes of Fire & Chemical magic - TLP has one of them and might have the other.

Tony Griffith is a retired head teacher and does a lot of science and maths based shows. H e has recently issued a series of books called reflections and I think each of them has a number of items from his science show.

I went to the education show at the NEC on Friday (useful for picking up varios little bits) and there was a stand there trying to sell a variety of shows including science bases, circus workshops, etc. To schools.

Forgot to mention my grandson age 5 went to a mad scientist party a couple of weeks ago and thought it was great. They mixed chemicals that bubbled over, etc.

In the 18th century, some scientists and would-be scientists travelled around the country giving demonstrations for the gentry of the latest things in natural philosophy as well as plenty of classics. It was a good way of securing patronage (pots of cash for serious experiments). They'd put alarm clocks under bell jars and pump the air out to make them stop ringing, or produce hydrogen and explode it, or re-animate frogs legs with a voltaic pile. Hours of creepy fun.

The best part is that it's not necessary to understand the underlying physics or biology to get these experiments to work, leaving you free to concentrate on their presentation. In many ways, the genuine seances that came a century later are intimately related to those demonstrations. They certainly led directly to the public lectures by the likes of Faraday at the Royal Society.

There's a famous painting by Joseph Wright, which shows someone looking suspiciously like Peter Stringfellow doing the bell jar on an unfortunate songbird for a well-to-do family: http://bit.ly/tPkhk

Someone has just advertised for sale on Magicweek all of the Tony Griffith Books. There would be a complete science show there I am sure as well as a lot of other good stuff.

Thanks Dave. I see from his website he has a book called The Magic of Science. I will put in an order and benefit from his experience.
I have an hour long show myself, but it always pays to benefit form the lessons of others, and I know he is good.
Perhaps he is the magician I heard about? He does lecture, doesn't he?

Yes he does lecture. I saw him about 12 months ago which is when I became aware of the Reflections books.
