Magician's are the scientists of the entertainment business?

Postby Jing » Sep 12th, '04, 20:58

I know i've read an article on this subject before, but i just can't seem to find it. It was about magical inventors, like Maskelyne and others. I might have found it from a link on here (i've done a search - no luck). Does any one recognise it? or have any other information? Here's hoping, anyway...Thanks...

Yes and no.. yes, because of the technical nature of what they're creating, no because science is about furthering understanding for everyone and explaining how things work, which is more or less the antithesis of what magicians do; they prefer to keep all those cool technical secrets and weird discoveries to themselves in order to make a more mystical show.

I've often found magic to be somewhere in a no-man's land between science and religion (as a form of belief rather than any theistic system), with different practioners occupying space nearer one side or the other; Penn and Teller and Uri Geller (hey, that rhymes!) are examples of Magis on opposite ends of that spectrum.

I'll add more to this later, as I have to dash now.
