Magic in India

Postby Mandrake » Apr 13th, '11, 17:44

My son is travelling in India for a couple of weeks and has some free time during the first week in May and has asked:

I wondered whether you could ponder the question as to whether there is anywhere good in Kolkata or the surrounding area to see some India style magic. I know I'm not going to stumble across a village with a young boy half way up a rope, vanishing into the clouds, but hoping to try and see something whilst I'm there.

So, does anyone know of anything in that locality? All info gratefully received!

Cheers,

I was in India last summer, performing magic all the while!

Although much of what we associate with Indian magic is just hyperbole, there is a definite culture of it in the country.
Magicians of all types can be found almost anywhere I think, but the best place to find them is in the cities.

I know its not exactly narrowing it down for you, but many of the cities are full of busking performers.
I think alot of the snake-charming acts have been outlawed, but there are plently of gymnastic and endurance type stunts. They would be the most common.
When you see a street magician its excellent. Sometimes
you see the cups and balls done in a really elegant way, othertimes
they do coin magic using a flute as a magic wand. They dont use playing cards or thimbles, so to me at least everything seemed exotic and fresh.

I know its not much help, but when I performed there alot of passerbys called me Jadoo. I figured it was an insult, but
it turns out that it is the Hindi for magic.
So ask a guide to show you some street Jadoo!

A note to any magicians: alot of
the strret boys are very knowlegable in sleight of hand,
and I learnt alot. Oh, and they actually do the Hindu shuffle!

Hope this helps a little!
