Sounds confusing Mandrake. I've been doing Standard Grade Spanish at school (exam on Wednesday :? ) and we had a Spanish guy, Fernando, come to the school to help for a while, and he spoke just like we were taught to.

Indeed it was confusing, 'Gunky' Jones, our usual teacher was quite a comical character but things just didn't always work out as planned. On the day of the Spanish GCE 'O'Level he went round every desk of the candidates in the exam handing out bits of paper with several Spanish words and translations on. Apprently the exam need us to know those words but the sylabus hadn't made this clear so we had an 'official' crib! If anyone's intersted, I did pass the exam!

The younger you are the better, pero mas vale tarde que nunca!!

When I was at college doing Spanish French I used to always watch the spanish sky channels.. eventually i started following pretty much all of it.

Thats why children can pick up 2 languages easily with 2 parents of opposing nativity.. constant exposure..

try and learn 5 new useful words a day.. and each week test yourself to see if you can recall all 35 words and put them into a context.

That should help somewhat
