My top 10 impromptu magic tricks and effect of all time...

Postby jonestown19 » Jun 12th, '11, 16:31

You asked for it....Now you have it! I was really hesitant to post this one. This list has won women's hearts, bets, and friendships all over the world. Enjoy!

My Top 10 impromptu magic tricks and effects...

• Kolossal Killer by Kenton Knepper- http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1404 - I place my everyday wallet on the table or in the spectators hands. Spectator names a card and the card they name is inside my wallet. My patter with this one is really what sets it apart. this can take me 10 minutes to perform if I really want to build it up.

• Psychokinetic Touch by Banachek aka Shaw- http://www.ronjo.com/magic/psychtouch.html - This one is very sensitive to me. I run into people who don't remember my name, nor I theirs. But they remember this effect, who was there, and what happened. Imagine a person across the room can feel the touch on the shoulder of someone on the other side of the room. The fact that this is $12 makes me mad. There are some huge pointers on this I would love to share with you if you work up the guts to actually try this. Talk to me first!

• Money Morph by Kevin King- http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/full/dvd-mo ... __2914.htm - The best bill switch on the planet. hands down.

• Psychokinetic Time by Banachek - http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/274 - Place the spectators own watch in their own hand, ask them to name a number, and the time on the watch has moved exactly however many minutes the spectator named. While in their hand! Gutsy to pull off. But unforgettable.

• Recap by Gregory Wilson - http://www.magic.org/store/product_info ... ts_id=1688 - I put this on the list because it reeks pure impromptu. It's a 5 phase routine with a Bic pen. Fun to perform, and adults and kids love it. I like to start off an impromptu routine with this to let my audience know I am a legit magician while keeping things fun before I blow their mind with some other stuff on this list.

• Winged Silver by David Roth - http://www.dreamlandmagic.com/expert-co ... -dvd1.html - For most coin magic you either started off with this DVD or J.B. Bobo. It's time to re-visit this and take some time to perfect the "winged silver" routine. I use a thumb palm variation which allows me to execute the routine smooth as silk without having to keep up on a worthy classic palm.

• Metal Bending - Learn a couple of spoon bending routines. Out of respect to quality benders I'm not going to recommend a product, DVD or where to go on this one. All I can say is that I started out learning from Guy Bavli 11 years ago, and that is probably a good place for you to start as well. In my opinion he is the bottom of the barrel in bending, but you will get the concept. To me, metal bending can be one of the most beautiful and quality magic you will ever perform. So be well practiced, and respect this art before ever actually performing it in front of an audience.

• Ring On A Stick by Michael Skinner - http://diamondsmagic.com/index.php?main ... t&Itemid=1 - This is just fun magic. When I first learned this you had to buy the effect on VHS individually. I guess now they have put this, the linking rings (which is the only linking rings routine it ever made any sense to me to learn), and color changing knives all on one DVD. I will use a borrowed pen in place of the stick, and a napkin instead of a hanky. Way slick though!!!

• The Bat - http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/239 - Having this little guy on you can really bring some noise! In an impromptu setting I like to already have this thing clipped to my undershirt, just below my sternum, or on the end of my undershorts just above my knee. I will borrow an analog watch and either hold it close to the bat on my chest. Stopping the seconds-hand from moving, or I will place the watch on a table and by raising and lowering my leg causes the second hand to stop. This is cool because I can have the spectator tell me when to stop the watch from ticking at any moment and make it happen (while snapping my fingers). The table works great for more people than the undershirt placement.

• Fizz Master by Paul Harris - http://www.llpub.com/zenshop/index.php? ... ts_id=1918 - If you don't own "The Art of Astonishment" books it is time to buy them. Paul Harris is just simply one of the best in my opinion and these books will keep you busy for years. In "Fizz Master" you take two unopened cans of soda/beer and shake one of them up as much as you want. then open that can to reveal little to no carbonation, and then open the other unshaken can and it explodes everywhere. This one is awesome for house parties!

I do rather like Recap... It's a nice simple (and effective) trick that doesn't rely on gimmicks or props. I like tricks like that

I'm vaguely surprised to see Fizz Master in that list. I didn't even know it was a proper marketed trick, more a science stunt taking advantage of the fact that modern cans don't fizz up if you leave it for a couple of seconds. I'm even more surprised it's in a $100 DVD set

Apart from the fact that I think Kolossal Killer is sh*te beside Marc Oberon's Bang On, it is hardly impromptu. And all the effects come from someone else.

Wasn't it David Devant who spoke about knowing six tricks well? Why on earth would anyone need ten impromptu tricks?

Palm reading. Only impromptu trick you'll ever need. Also means you can carry normal human things around in your pockets.

How practical is your Bang effect?

The bat? The bat? I'll say it again, THE BAT made somebody's top 10 impromptu effects? Oy. I'll start with the obvious. I'm in a bad mood, so I'm not great at holding my tongue. First the bat is not even a trick. It is a method. I truly believe that 'impromptu' is in the mind of the spectator not the magician, but still The Bat is far from impromptu unless you dress with the thing in the morning, and any impromptu effects I can perform with it, I can really go 'impromptu' and use some sort of sleight retention vanish.

I've nothing against gimmicks. In fact I love them, but the bat, raven and all the other's of that ilk usually end up in a bottom drawer in the arsenal of most magicians I know. Sadly most of the people I know are magicians.

We'll if you really want to do it decently. You'll need a decent pair of glasses or a magnifying glass.

It isn't easy, but it's within most people's grasp. I have both a close-up version (Gimmicked) and stage version (Gimmickless). Both look identical, and you can use the close up method on stage. I just use the gimmickless one on stage because it's gimmickless!

Not really to be honest. I have a magnifying glass that I have on my table at psychic fairs, but I never use it - no need. When out and about i certainly don't need a magnifying glass. As for glasses - well, if you need them they'll probably already be on your head.

Like Paul I don't need glasses or a magnifying glass (aside from the bifocals I wear anyway to prevent me walking into people and walls). I do, however, carry a tiny flashlight which is very handy for readings in dark pubs and other venues.
