Gotta love magicians!

Who has honestly heard a real layman say ( oh, that dynamo is rubbish isn't he, he didn't deliver good patter during his coin in bottle)

People don't care, people have changed, shame magic obviously hasnt. How often do we hear "I wish itv would do re-runs of Paul Daniels, nixon etc.) I got news for you all, we as magicians might like it but the general public wouldn't. They have changed they seem to me to enjoy these more "organic" shows where someone on the street does something amazing with a normal object to a normal person.

Do I love they guy? No, but...... Every layman that mentions him says how great he is, so is he doing the job he is meant to? Yes, does that make him a good magician, yep afraid so.

Good luck to him

I have to second this, the number of people who have said to me;

"I don't normally like magic but that Dynamo guy is amazing!"

That's why magicians who look to entertain magicians will never be as successful as those that just look to entertain everyone else.

I've heard the same over and over again.

"Have you seen Dynamo? That guy is amazing! Like proper amazing." When people say that about Derren Brown I whole heartedly agree but Dynamo is good and the show is entertaining but I wouldn't say amazing and none of his tricks have blown me away. Oh, apart from the klaxon one on the roof. That took me by surprise.

But it's the same with TV and music - popular is often hard to understand. Or to talk West End shows, Dirty Dancing ran for five years (a show without a band, just dancing and lip-syncing to a backing track and just rehashing iconic moments from the classic film) yet the phenomenal Spring Awakening was forced to close down in 2 months.

And why do amazing stage plays close within about 3-6 months of opening yet the puerile Ben Elton w**k piece We Will Rock You is now in "it's 10th rocking year" (I like Queen but the musical is pants).

I loved We Will Rock You, the only downside is that Ben Elton penned it!

Wish I had seen it when Robert Smith was the lead though, the guy doing it when I saw it was abit "boybandy". The reason it is still running after 10 years is because it basks in the reflected glory of Queen itself, same with Dirty Dancing.

Something with a legion of fans will always be more successful than something trying to grow it's fanbase.

Mate at work who is also into magic is convinced camera trickery is involved with some of the stuff, what do people think?

I must say, as much as I love full routines, there is something quite nice about approaching the man in the street and saying "check this out", blowing their mind then moving on

The show has an "under-produced" feel to it but I think that might be deliberate?!

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

I prefer watching people making magic with their hands and raw materials (cards included) and I found some of the Dynamo stuff a little sneaky in that you know there's a set-up but it's edited like "Hey there! Here are some Euromillions tickets still in the stand - BAM! - now it's £100".

And the walking through glass window at the gallery was rather staged. Not everyone's reaction was in line with what is expected. But as I said earlier in the thread, I enjoyed the show and found his awkwardness endearing.

probably not so much camera trickery..... but he does use all kinds of sneaky peaky methods to get those effects performed

I also find myself not really enjoying watching Dynamo. He's very good, certainly, and impresses the guys at work.

However, even though I haven't got much idea how most of it is done, I know it involves other people, gimmicks and setup for most of them because they're blatently impossible without such things. Even if I'm wrong, I won't think about it because the obvious answer is just as likely.

Maybe it's one of the reasons I prefer close-up and cards - there's something a bit more 'honest' about them (I use the word very carefully).

In the same way that Kris Angel 'flies' between buildings... there's not really much thought required and the misdirection is mostly camera work.

I suppose I like my magic a bit more subtle, rather than Hollywood-ised.

Let's analyse this:
Dynamo is a talented magician with lot's of skill and technique.
But having talked to him, it seems he is also a shy and quiet person.
Put that together with an ambitious TV Director that tells him what to do, you get a programme like this. I'm sure it was very interesting for lay people, especially between 12 and 25, hence the music and editing. And yes ... I agree, a few of the effects were "A lá Criss Angel". But I'm sure that's what the director wanted.

Anthony Jacquin couldn't even control his performance on Odd one in. The director told him to make one of the guys think he was a chicken. Ant said No way! but the director convinced him that was what the audience would like to see.

When you're on TV, you don't always get to do what you want! And if you insist to do what you want to do, you might face a revealing camera angle in some cases. Basta!
