Starting out in Cardistry

Postby McCannMagic » Jul 10th, '11, 01:23

Hello everyone.

I would describe myself fairly advanced in the execution of the basic card moves and have developed an interest in starting out in cardistry.
I chose the 'Sybil' cut (a false variation I found) as my first starting out attempt at cardistry and I've gotten to grips with it pretty well considering I've been practicing like a demon over the past 2 days!

I was wondering with the experience and knowledge out there of people who are advanced in cardistry, what would you advise to me for sources of starting out properly in regards to books, DVD's, etc?

Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks :)

p.s. My friend gave me the Dan & Dave 'Trilogy' Flourishes DVD and I attempted some of them and they are quite out of my league obviously, so I hope you don't suggest that!

Brian Tudors "showoff" volume one, would be a good place to start. Most of what is developed today uses moves he created.

Alongside that you should check Jerry Cestowskis book "the encyclopedia of flourishes" http://www.flourishman.com/

Or De'vo has Xtreme Beginnerz. http://www.ellusionist.com/xtreme-beginners.html

Also: Jeff McBrides - The art of card manipulation 1, 2 and 3

Although it depends on your definition of "cardistry" really.
If your definition is "I'm a tool that will only ever perform on YouTube" then not really any point in the McBride series; but, if you're a serious performer real world type then there really is!

Edit:

Is the only thing of Brian's worth buying.
After he made this the fame shot to his head and he seemingly became a massive tool.
Seriously, watch vol1 then vol2 and you'll see what I mean. Better yet, watch "The Heckler", worst £30 I ever spent EVER!

Hi.
As above - define "Cardistry", what does it mean? I have heard it used, but never defined. Do you mean Flourishes and Card Manipulation? If so, all the sources to start with are probably listed here.
If you mean "Flourishes", are you going to be performing them as a flourish, in addition to "magic", or do you just like card-juggling?
Are you going to perform to a TouTube audience for adulation, or perform to real people for adulation?
Understanding these will help us answer the question properly.

Here's Brian being a Cardistry gangster. Its like watching Al Pacino playing Dan or Dave Buck.

Love it. Also, Andrei Jikh's Genesis is good for people who want to get into flourishing.

Thank you for all of your replies guys :)

I mean Cardistry in the form of flourishes, i.e. Dan and Dave style.

I do wish to perform it in the real world and not on YouTube, hope this helps.

Does not compute!

This kind of thing is only for YouTube isn't it?

I was going to say that...simply because I have never seen, and do not know of any "real world" situations where it would be appropriate to "perform" these.
Perhaps the odd one during a card routine, but unless there's a reason, I just see it as "card juggling".
However, I'm probably just a middle-aged fogey who doesn't "get" these things!! :D

Yeah, why? Its a bit pointless, and specs will just think you are a "male chicken".

If you want to learn some flashy useful stuff, then why not try Dan and Dave's trilogy thingy? I don't know how difficult it is, but it looks pretty awesome. But don't copy their patter. Because its non-existent.
