Region 1 and Region 2 DVD

Postby themagicwand » Jul 12th, '11, 18:29

Trying to buy Nightmare Alley on DVD, This appears to be freely available in the States and a region 1 DVD can be bought for around a fiver. However for a region 2 DVD the price is £40 - £50, probably because it has never been properly released on this side of the Atlantic. So my question is, will my DVD player (which is fairly bog standard) play a region 1 DVD or will it just go "no thanks"?

Any advice gratefully received.

PS Would a region 1 work on my PC instead??

DVD player, probably not, although devices are available to make DVDs region free (would have to look into this for you).

On the PC, you can often change the DVD region you want it to play, thus allowing it to play region 1 DVDs. However, you can only change this setting a limited number of times!

If you are able to give the model and make of the dvd player, this can be looked into.
I know in the past, a lot of standard dvd players were available in both region free and region locked. They were the same dvd player, but with the region lock lifted on one. You just had to find the right setting to change and you could turn the dvd player into region free.
I am a bit unsure on newer dvd players as its been a long time since i've purchased one.

As for the PC, the above is correct, I think it was 5 times you could change it untill it was locked to that region. I had two dvd players in my last computer, which one was set to region 1 and the other region 2.

As crazy as it sounds, the cheaper the DVD player, the more likely it is to play multi-region. You can probably pick one up for about £20 somewhere.

Or as others have suggest, google the brand and model and "region lock" or "multi-region" and you might find a code you have to enter via the remote.
