Torrent site

Postby themagicwand » Aug 19th, '11, 09:27

Dan at Lebanon Circle kindly pointed out that some of my work is available on a torrent site. Very annoying but not sure if there's much I can do about it? And morally, as someone who spent much of the late 1970's & early 1980's taping music off the radio, should I be complaining?

Any thoughts or advice welcomed.

I removed the link to the torrent site from my original post as the site made my PC get into a bit of a tizz and a pop-up ad for poker suddenly appeared, so better safe than sorry. Didn't want to inadvertently blow up someone's computer!

Have you contacted the torrent site. Their rules state they do not violate copyright. Obviously they know people will, but if you contact them they should delete the files, which may cause the uploader to think again. Or ask Tomo about plans to upload infected files to destroy the unscrupulous.

Fantastic. I've been meaning to torrent reader of minds for a while, but couldn't find it online. Nice to know that there are still decent people out there willing to spend their time and effort uploading it.

Have they uploaded the jack the ripper one too? Would be good to get both at once. Birds and stones and all that.

Love

Having a quick search and they also have other people's work from here. So sadly it's probably someone from here or within the bizarre community.

Freddie actually tracked down someone who uploaded the Mystic Menagerie and named and shamed them, wonder if it's possible to do the same with this stuff?

Would you kindly stop drawing attention to it then and edit your post.

I wouldn't be too concerned by it given that there are no seeders and no activity on it (same with other authors on here). If someone wanted it they could be waiting an eternity. Or if your'e curious, try downloading your own work.

But it wouldn't hurt contacting the hosts of the torrent as well.

Bit torrent is a form of filesharing using a piece of software. You download the file(s) and upload what you have downloaded at the same time. There are legal and illegal torrents. The only torrents i have anything to do with are Grateful Dead and Phish shows taped from soundboard or by fans. Both bands allow fans to trade shows for free in a legal manner using torrents.

It is sad that so many people torrent magic items but it is hard to stop.

Sorry!! Quick explanation:

Torrents work by seeders (people with the files) making it available and the leechers (people who want the file) download it from them directly.

BUT FOR THAT TO WORK....

Seeder creates torrent files and it gets hosted on a torrent website. Let's call it www.scum-store.com. Scum Store acts as the intermediary if you like. It links the two (this is the loophole of torrents - the website don't host the offending items, they're merely putting two people in touch with each other)

A leecher searches Scum Store looking for things to download. They find the movie / album / book and download the torrent file hosted on Scum Store. Then they wait.

The leecher won't get a kilobyte of information unless the leecher is online at the same time as the seeder and both have torrent software open and running.

Once a leecher has the entire file, they become classified as a seeder too. And with two seeders now out there, it'll be easier for people to download it as the chances of someone being online with it available has increased by 100%. As more people get it, the easier it is to download

SO....

In the case of your file, not only were there no leechers TRYING to download, there weren't any seeders online making it available either. Plus according to the website, since it was upload no-one has tried to download it either (though this is no reflection of its quality :))

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say someone's put it up there just to cause a stir. Torrents were not made for tiny files with a very niche audience. Unless a lot of people want it, the torrent dies a slow and quiet death.

I hope that made sense.
