hi folks as from saturday i shall be abroad in scotland for six weeks teaching bussiness men how to improve there sales techniques through the aplication of magic, well thats what my agent says.
i think it will be an excuse for a p-up 5 days a week shame i don't drink, it will be basic coin, card and impromptu stuff with some easily gaffed / non gaffed bussiness card tricks like printing from blanks.

hopefully there be a few corporate do's on the weekends too so i may not be able to get computer access but if i do i'll send you a roveing report.

Hello Jason

I read your post with interest and noted your comments about having an agent.

I only perform my magic on a part time basis as I have a full time profession away from magic. Until now I have gained business through word of mouth and referrals and haven't done too bad so far.

However, I was thinking about registering with an entertainments agent and was wondering if you could give some pointers and let me know if it's worth it? Also, what percentage cut do they normally take and is there anything to watch out for in contracts, agreements etc.?

Thanks and good luck on your travels.

dat agencys are a good thing if you want to get into outdoor events and larger gigs but i would not recomend them for general bookings as there is to much competition.
the agencys cut depends on how much work they do for you and is taken out before you get paid and as they get you the booking don't worry about there cut which can vary greatly.

basicly you should not pay an agency to go on there books though some agencys will make a charge for publicity photos and such and if you pay thease fees that is up to your own counsil.

remember that any bookings you get from an agency should not be pressed for private bookings as you could find you good name slated by the agency so think carefully about wether you need an agency at all.

i use a few agencys for corporate bookings and for outdoor events like navydays and such but don't use them for my private bookings and childrens parties, as i feel its important to keep thease seperate, thease i get mostly be recomendation and advertising by bussiness card and bootsale events.

hope this helps you on your way.

That's really usefull info - much appreciated!

I've often wondered if there is benefit and I'll now keep going the way I am at the present time and give them a wide berth. I'd just like a few more gigs than I'm getting at the moment but know that this takes time.

Thanks again and if you're ever in my neck of the woods then let me know and I'll buy you a pint.
