1st sort of gig !

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

There's loads of info in the "Little Tips" sticky but, from experience regardless of what you read, you will take too much and you won't perform everything.

I'm now down to 2 walk round sets, 2 table hopping sets plus a couple of extra one off effects for special guests etc. most of my table hopping set can be done without a table. Rob's right 2 or 3 effects per group is sufficient.

With regards to the wedding, be prepared for the unexpected, e.g. they've booked you for table hopping but the room has been cleared 5 minutes before you start and you end up entertaining in the bar area with no tables!

Even if you're not into magic for kids take something suitable for children as you will be expected to show them something!

For after the gig(s) keep a notebook/diary and record what effects you performed, what went well and what wasn't received as well as you'd like.

Finally... keep it simple, best of luck and most importantly remember to enjoy yourself.

Im thinking maybe i should go out and perform for strangers to get some experience before the 22nd. How did you go about performing the 1st time to the public ? I dont drink so im never in a pub to show people, i have been thinking about going to my local as its pretty dead in there by the looks of it just to practice lol

Its that or doing a Blaine and doing "street" magic lol

Over the past few weeks I have been doing a few tricks for the lads on a Sunday after our round of golf
in my local club house.
Last Sunday there was quite a crowd hanging back waiting for me to come in (around 25/30 members)
It is quite daunting, given that I have only been doing this for a few months, though I do practice for several hours a day.
Still, up until a few weeks ago, I was one of those magicians who would pull the cards out of my pocket, only to put them back again.

So try to picture it. I walk into the club house, & as soon as I get through the door, the voices yell out.
"Here he is, Carl the magic man"
So I got my cup of tea, sat down, & decided what I was going to do.
I sat at the far table, with the first 4/5 members & did a simple "Dr Daley Ace routine" followed by P Gordon's "Diminishing not Likely"

I then moved down to the next couple of tables, & knocked the chairman dead with "Holy Moley" followed by J Bannon's "Spin Dr"
I did J Carey's simple, but effective "Gemini Detector" & followed up with his "Counting on You"

I then sat at the very end table, & performed Darwin Ortiz's "Jazz Aces" followed by an A Collombini "Oil, & Water" routine.
Never put a foot wrong, & was chuffed to bits. Gave me so much of a buzz, & well worth all the practice, & time I have put in over the past few months.
All I wanna do now is more. :D :D

Good luck mate, & just enjoy the experience.

CArl...

Wow - what an inspiring story, that is absolute quality

Just the fact people were waiting for you must have given you a buzz!!

I perform wherever I can, people at work, the girls that work the softplay my Son goes to (my biggest fans :D ), people waiting in queues at Chessington, people in Sainsburys, I just love the reactions

I never actually stop people and bother them, more show them something if we in a mutual waiting type area or queue, and when you have a Son that is nearly 4 years old always asking if we can "do some magic today please Daddy", it might be easier, not sure. But who can resist a toddler asking "can you think of a card please?"

The funny thing, I feel much more comfortable when my Son is there, so whipping out the ID in a queue for the Tuk Tuk with my boy asking them to "think about a card", its quite a cool routine as we pulls the card out and hands it to them! And sometimes when we go shopping he'll ask me to bring the cards out, his fav trick being one of my fav SV routines "take a pile away" as he calls it.

UPDATE-

Just come back from my last chance shopping trip to Alakazam before sat night to buy smoke (for something a bit different almost a bit dynamo'ish lol), look sharp and humbug (so i'll post reviews of each once i've had a play with each of them). So im getting some advice for sat night from the blokes that work there when the door opens and none other than Andy Nyman walks in ! :)

Awesome stuff. He was at Frightfest in August (they showed his new movie The Glass Man) and he was always hanging out in the cinema lobby chatting to fans between films. I didn't get a chance to speak to him because he was usually in conversation with someone and I don't like barging in when people are chatting. Some people have no problem doing it though.

He also hosted Andy Nyman's Film Quiz from Hell at the event, which was a good laugh. :D

This just posted, on Alakazam's fb page:

When Russ Stevens and Andy Nyman arrive at alakazam then disappear with Peter Nardi, you know something special is coming.

Regarding the wedding, i would recommend learning Anniversary Waltz for the Bride and Groom. They may be too busy to watch you, but if you do perform for them, you wont find a better closer in my opinion.
