Egg bag handling issues

Postby MagicIain » Oct 4th, '11, 16:27

Wow. It's been a while since I've been on here. Doesn't it all look smart!?

I'm looking for some advice. I bought the Egg Bag deluxe from MagicNevin.com and I don't feel comfortable making the egg vanish.

Having it appear from it's vanished state is simple and satisfying, but the instructions make it unclear as to how to make it vanish. Having watched Wayne Dobson and Tom Mullica perform it on youtube, I've got a feeling that where my special whotsit in the bag is placed is quite a bit different to theirs.

My instructions read: "Show the bag and the egg separately. Put the egg into the bag as you begin turning the bag upside down. The egg is put into the ****** in this process. Now both hands are used to turn the bag inside out, and the egg has vanished." Except it hasn't.There is no way in hell that during the turning of the bag upside-down that the egg can be vanished.

I really want to use this in my kids' show with two volunteers, having one find the bag empty, then the other finding the egg. Then making the egg vanish for the kid who found it and re-appear for the kid who said the bag was empty. Then finishing on everyone doing a chicken impression (a la Wayne Dobson's routine) to get the egg back at the end when I seem to have lost it.

The routine involves two vanishes and my fumbling of them is awful. It's a new routine and I'm only testing it out this Saturday for the first time as bonus material so it's not a gig deal-maker or -breaker, but I really think there's some great mileage in it.

I really feel there's something obvious I'm missing.

Any help appreciated.

Its all down to who's bag your using.

Im not sure, but i think both perfomers referenced in your post used the Malini style bag.( as do so many of todays egg bag workers) The best thing you can do, is drop Wayne a line via his web site, and ask him about the type of bag he used.(I dont think he does it any more)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

That's the funny thing - I figured it was probably down to the bag but the one I have is one of the most expensive! The Malini one is only a fiver as far as I can remember. Well I suppose worth a punt either way.

I'll drop Wayne a line too and see what he says.

Thanks Dale.

I have an old Supreme bag - what I'd call standard design, as described in Hugard's Modern Magic Manual (another plug), where I learned how to use it. I've never had a problem; I think the trick is to make sure that the gimmicked side is towards your body when it's inside out.

Thanks Barry.

I did email Wayne Dobson and it seems I do have the wrong bag. Seeing the word 'deluxe' in the item title doesn't necessarily translate into 'best'. He says he uses the Malini design so I've invested in one.

At £20 I'm certain it's going to be much smoother to handle than my £7.50 deluxe model!

I think I must have made this mistake as mine was a deluxe bag of a similar price (possible even the same store but can't remember) and I gave up on it as it was too hard to load. I'm glad it wasn't me being rubbish!

Dave I'll let you know if it's worth investing in once I've got it. Reading the thread back I've clearly been a bit of a div and not researched the product properly.

Still, at least I've had an email from Wayne Dobson :)

The Malini Egg Bag you can drop the egg into naturally from above (or get the spectator to drop it in from above). You can then say the magic word and pretend its disappeared. But you actually do the you know what when you put your hand in and grab the bottom corner to turn it inside out. Or you can put your hand in the bag with the egg and do the you know what at that point.

However with the Deluxe Egg Bag you go through that old fashioned motion of turning the bag upside down as you put the egg in and apparently put the egg in the up turned bottom corner, but actually you do the you know what as your hand comes back out. Watch Tommy Cooper's performance of the egg bag and you'll see how he turns the bag upside down as he puts the egg into it and apparently holds the egg in the up turned bottom corner.

I hope this doesn't give too much away.
