Advice and any tips: My first magic gig

Postby Freestyler » Oct 12th, '11, 22:28

Hello all,

After taking up magic just over 10 months ago with constant practise, i came out and told everyone in July i have been mastering it.

I now have my proper first gig/live performance in 2 weeks time, i now need a routine which i've done on paper and it seems ok but i just need to go through it 5-6 times a day, and basically just some tips and advice to help me get through.

I'm a very bubbly person and i can talk for England, i have a big sense of humour and I'm the furthest thing away from being shy. i come across very confident all the time and I'm outgoing to i don't worry about my showmanship and confidence.

I'm doing around 25 minutes, but i've asked for the option of doing 15 minutes, then another 10 minutes later in the night.

i have performed to a few bands and some footballers the last few months and have a few big band shows coming up aswell, but i only did one or two tricks with them as i was restricted to what i had with me. as i know the mentality will be different to what I'm used to now, when performing a full proper routine.

any advice or tips would be appreciated

thankyou :)

Hey Freestyler!

Congrats on the gig, and the best of luck with it :D

You may find his thread of use: ftopic41128.php

Compare notes with Jon himself maybe - he doesn't bite (well, not hard in any case  )

Above all, have fun, and let us know how you get on?

Either way, open with something failsafe. You'll no doubt be a little nervous, however confident a person you are, so you want your opener to be self-working or something you have already mastered.

That will give you confidence to move into other effects, with the specs already on your side.

Make sure you let us know how you get on!

Great.

When on stage, speak so you can be heard at the back of the room (even when mic'd up) - they wouldn't hear you without the mike in a large place but it helps with your vocal projection.

Also, engage with the whole audience, address your lines to different areas of the audience so everyone feels included.

Hello all,

sorry for the very loooooong delay!

So it turned out my first booking ended up being cancelled, yes i was a bit let down as i was looking forward to it! but the good news is the person who gave me that gig has given me the chance to do his works christmas do! plus i've had a few more bookings the last few weeks for christmas, my next one now is just under 3 weeks away, so i have plenty of time to prep again and add extra things.

anyhow after alot of thinking, i had a sit down looked at my routine and wondered is it too long? is it too short? just what is the perfect length for a routine? 25 minutes sounds alot and i don't know if i will fill the time.

i have 11 tricks down on paper, is that too many or not enough?

their is a variation, it's not all cards but about 75% of it is.

thankyou.

Are you still doing a stage show? In my opinion, 8 card tricks in an 11-trick stage show is a bit card-heavy.

Maybe tell us more about your routine so we can offer advice.

If you don't know if you can fill the time, do the show through in jugs entirety and time it. Talk slowly (the temptation under pressure is to speed up, don't do it).
Remember you'll burn through some time waiting for volunteers to come to the stage and so on.

Evening all! :)

not been on here for a while! after a number of times it being cancelled again twice! tonight is the night people!

I finally have my routine done after chopping and changing about the last 2 weeks, it's memorised and i've gone over it 8-10 times the last few days and just finished doing it again now. I'm doing a stage show to about 25 people.

I have 10 tricks penned out with some variation, 7 of the 10 are card tricks. I won't be winning magician of the award 2011 by any means, it's a simple but effective and still powerful routine, I'm doing tricks to the best of my ability and what I'm confident with.

I'm rather stoked, but also a little nervous aswell. i have 2 hours to prepare and I'm just currently sinking a few cans of Strongbow to get rid of the nerves!

Gonna take my time, there's no rush. and i don't have to feel like i have to speed it up.

Any last minute thoughts or words of advice would be much appreciated!

thank you :)
