Best Reactions

Postby Tjex1 » Oct 18th, '11, 16:52

Hi

I recently got an ID and have been getting incredible reactions from it, but then it dawns on me... could I actually get these reactions using any skill? I do a card to hand effect which involves a pass which is incredibly deceptive but to date nothing has got a better reaction than an ID. I find that mentalism tircks (forgive the pun) get mental reactions.

Feel free to post any stories of great reactions. And could anyone give advice on amazing reaction effects?

Thanks,

Tjex

The ID always gets the best reaction

First ever piece of magic I performed was texting a mate to think of a card for FOUR HOURS!

Imagine the reaction when I pulled his card out the wrong way round before we played football

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

I like the ID and it gets great reactions.

However both my signed coin bend that uses SoH and a version of a flicking to any card named trick where the spectator does the flicking get far better reactions simply because of the emotional hook attached.

Steve Dela's two card monte found on 'work and play' gets fantastic reactions as its all done in the specs hands and is also a great deal of fun!

I like the idea of an ID such as what it can accomplish, same goes for other gimmicked decks, but personally I'd feel lazy using them, also I fear that decks such as these can inhibit the learning of new magicians. I'm sure it's the case for quite a few people to use one of these decks and then just stop putting effort into actually aquiring the skills to perform what I would call propper magic. I think magic is an art form such as music or dancing, and just like propper art it shouldn't be able to just be brought in a shop.

I'm sure this will give me a lot of heat but I will always be anti-gimmicked decks. Like I said, I love the ideas of them, but just feel that it's just kids magic rather than skill. Please though, for anyone who is offended at this, I don't need lectures on how it's all about the presentation, I'm well aware of that. I'm just saying my piece, not looking to debate this.

As for the actual question, my favourite reaction is after performing my own thought of card routine. They really feel as though you read their mind. I've also started to perform a routine that has been only theoretical up until recently where a sealed envelope is placed onto a table, a ring is borrowed and then vanished, you then have someone take the tabled envelope, tear it open to find the ring inside. The emotional response has been amazing as I perform this piece at weddings and wrap its presentation around love and destiny.

Proper magic? Is it not the magician and his ability to perform and entertain using magic that defines magic? The trick, any trick doesn't do anything without the magician. Are you so hung up on method that you don't see magic for what it really is. Perhaps you shouldn't be entertaining the thought of being or becoming a magician. After all you are just doing tricks not actual 'proper' magic.

Completely agree Mr. B. Mat.

When Copperfield stunned millions with his Grandpa's Aces effect, was it not real magic because he used gimmicked cards?

I knew someone would jump on that, I should have just not said anything. My opinion is what it is. I am a magician, and my view on performance and method have done nothing but supported me and put food on my table for a while so in my mind, the way I think of such things isn't wrong, I also know that it's not the single right way either but I suggest that you keep in mind everyones views are different.

I'm not going to debate this partly because it would be hijacking someone elses thread but also because I don't feel the need to. I know that there are people out there who think like you, but there are also people out there who think like me. This argument has happened before and regardless of what's said, you'll still go on doing things your way and I'll still carry on doing things my way. That's where I stand on this debate.

Is this the trick Blaine did on what is magic ? With the deck on the table a woman names a card then flicks a pile of the cards off straight to her card ?

I've had some great reactions from Tool, the effect called illusion I think - I cover the deck with a silk for a brief second as per the Metamorphosis trick. This takes any heat - if there were any - from the gimmick.

Other than that I recommend, the ID, icontact, WOW and although I've not road-tested it yet I think the ILC deck is going to be another winner.

Couldn't guarantee it's the same method, but the effect is the same, yes.

Ask Ste Portfield and The Devil's Taylor...they've both seen me perform it!
