Postby miriam397 » Oct 18th, '11, 23:45

hi guys

a quick question.....

i have small hands and really struggle with some card cuts, slights and controls should i perserver or admit defet and only learn certin moves etc?

im willing to put in the extra time but not if i will never be able to perform them well i would rather concentrate on strengths

Bridge size cards are slightly narrower if that helps?

Im sure i heard or read that Jay Sankey has small hands, so at least if you cant do some moves you'll be able to invent a new trick every 10secs ;)

Short answer 'no'
long answer 'noooooooo'

Everyones hands are different and you may have to adjust certain moves, we all do. confidence, fluidity and misdirection is what is going to get you going.

I've only got small hands but have found that most slieghts are perfectly doable, you just have to play a litte more attention to misdirection and angles.

What exactly are you having trouble with?

Funnily enough it occured to me while watching him in the theatre t'other night, that Paul Daniels has small hands and it hasn't affected his career.....

I have small hands and quickly realised that I will never master the pass. I got a stripper deck instead :D

I have small hands and a poker size card will just be covered by my hand (hand is a couple of millimetres wider than the card each side). I haven't started learning to palm yet, but I'm expecting I'll have to adapt when I do.

Sankey says in his Extremely Ambitious DVD that he does have small hands. They still look a smidge bigger than mine though. :)

I have very small hands, to the extent that I have to millimetre perfect on my palms.

And before we get onto the pass, I can do a very decent pass so anyone saying that hand size has anything to do with that is speaking lies, although you will get more cover with largfer hands. That is the main thing. Larger hands= Larger cover. Smaller hands= exactly the same sleight but with less cover and margin for error.

Hello miriam,

Never give up,

I can remember many years ago when I first began to learn the guitar.
Watching musician's holding down the bottom E string with there thumb, & thinking
how I would never be able to do that, seen as how I only have small hands.

With practice I was soon able to hold down that string.
Now I can hold both bottom E, & A string too using my thumb.
Same with the card slights, it will come given time, & practice.

Good fun learning init :D

Put down the bridge size cards and walk away slow. Practice with poker, and if you must, perform with bridge. Kind of like playing billiards. Practice on a large table, then go kick some serious butt on a tavern table. Although I have to admit, I practice and perform with poker size.

Not quite the same problem as you, but it has similar consequences: my little finger is a bit bent, which means when I'm palming a card, there is always a window between my pinky and ring finger and its dead obvious that theres a card in my palm if you look out for it (I know this from practicing in the mirror). Having said that, I have never had a problem with being found out. Long story short: misdirection and showmanship = win :D
