Usually they just want to check you are not a gibbering loony, not looking to sponge and that you are keen to put the effort in to further your knowledge. Just be pleasant and tell them what you get up to. Obviously have a few reliable effects on you just in case.

It's usually quite relaxed so don't stress.

On a similar topic, I'm also planning to apply to join the Magic Circle (in London in my case) and am equally interested in the process involved, particularly the audition.

Contact Michael Vincent, who is a member of the the Inner Magic Circle and often judges auditions. He is really friendly and helpful. I'm sure if you e-mail him your phone number, he'll call you and guide you through the process.

I'm a member of Portsmouth magic circle, don't worry to much about the interview it's just to find out a bit about you. You will then be required to do a 8-10 min routine (on a different night)

As for the magic circle audition, just perform the tricks you are comfortable doing.

Hi Stacy

Are you a member of a local society. The Pentacle club in Cambridge is a great small club and I know a number of the members there are members of the Magic Circle so would be able to advise when you join the Magic Circle which has stricter standards that local clubs.

If I can help further, please let me know.

Dave.

I am a member of the Pentacle club as it happens and I was quite surprised at the lack of interview or audition process when I joined!
Needless to say I'm not going to apply to the Magic Circle until I'm good and ready, but I feel like I should start practicing my audition routine as soon as possible, which is tricky because thus far I don't really know what I'm going to do. My strong areas in magic don't exactly flow nicely from one to another.

Plus my strongest area, rubber bands, wouldn't work so well in the setup there. Having watched a couple of performances in the Devant room (which is where I'm told the close-up auditions happen) it strikes me that it's still not quite close-up enough for rubber band magic to work.

Thanks for the advice...it was very informal and very friendly :)

I have been invited to do an 8-10min routine which I have started coming up with ideas for and am in the process of reading 'scripting magic' but once again any tips would be greatly appreciated

One step closer...:)
