Super simple routine help please

Postby Pepsi Twist » Nov 17th, '11, 05:25

Hey guys, I've been reading and learning for a little while now and at Christmas I have to do a little show for the family, just a few card effects, but though I read a trick and give it a go, I've not really practiced any of them very much. More fun ones than long winded maths ones would be helpful, Design for laughs is my only one so far, and maybe Twisting the aces. So if anyone could suggest a few short simple tricks (I know DFL isn't too short, but it makes up for it in fun!) So if anybody could spare a few minutes to name a few effects or list a short routine I would be very appreciative :D

If you're looking to do some self-working card tricks, have a look at Karl Fulves' Self-Working Card Tricks. Plenty to choose from there. If you can do 'Design for Laughter', though, you obviously can do some sleight-of-hand so you don't have to confine yourself to just self-working tricks,

Some self-working tricks aren't that great though, as they are very long winded and call for endless dealing of the cards. Choose wisely would be my advice.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the performance!

And from the same book comes the beautiful Gemini Twins

If presented the right way this is a real powerful self-worker

Just looking in Fulves, can see a trick called astro twins? Or were you referring to the other book?

Gemini Twins is actually in More Self Working Card Tricks. It's up there for me, definitely one of the top 5 greatest card effects possible...completely self working.

Ahhh, I may have made a mistake, it could be "More self-working card tricks"

But pretty sure this is fairly cheap anyway

I am now interested by Astro Twins....

Just reading it it's one where you get the spectators to swap seats, if that sounds familiar?

'Out of This World' probably being one of the greatest card effects ever created, and certainly the best self-working trick. In my opinion that is.

Hey cc100, could you please let me know what book this is in - i've checked the above and can't seem to find it in any of his books. The closest was "out of site?"

ps. Sorry to butt in on this one!

Pepsi - The most stunning effect i've achieved lately - with the classic Three card monte. Sorry if this is a cliched trick or whatever, but master this one and you're lauging... I personally learnt it with "2 ten of hearts" and an Ace of spades... Great trick. :D

No, nothing like that

2 cards locate their opposites in the deck, and can be done in the hands of the spectator

Always gets a great reaction

Gosh thanks for the quick replies! I watched a video of Gemini twins, that looks like a good one. Does anyone recommend an Out of this world? There's sooo many versions of each trick, it's pretty confusing for a beginner. And yes I can do some sleight, not very convincing DLs or Pass just yet though :p

Edit: I was just looking for this Gemini twins and it's come up on Google books so I learnt it already! I'll still add the book to my wanted list though of course :)

The very original Out of this World will suit your purpose. Perhaps from there you can perform Harry Lorayne's completely impromptu version of the same effect using any borrowed shuffled deck.

Yeah there are a lot of versions of 'Out of This World'. The traditional version of it is in Karl Fulves' book Self Working Close-up Card Tricks. You could learn the traditional version first, and then maybe try some of the others and see which you like best.

Also, if you're fairly new to card magic, I wouldn't spend too much time on the pass. It is difficult, and it's never going to be completely invisible no matter how much you do it (well, not the classic pass anyway). There are lots of other ways of achieving the same thing. Have a look at The Royal Road to Card Magic if you want to get started with sleight of hand card tricks.

Out of this World, the trick which entertained and fooled Winston Churchill during WW2, was invented by Paul Curry and it's in his book 'Magician's Magic' which is available via Dover Books for about £13 or so. There's a review at:

What you could do is spend around £10 and buy the rather good Joshua Jay - Complete course in magic, comes with a 2 hour DVD, and included in his ten greatest card tricks is, OOTW

The book has some great stuff on magic with everyday objects as well and is well worth the cash
