When is it theft?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

It's natural to want to emulate someone (i.e. a performer) or something (i.e. a trick) you admire. Surely copying is an essential part of the learning process, before you improve and then develop your own style and effects?

I definitely agree. It's maybe not ideal, but I think its only natural. In martial arts we talk about shu ha ri, it's the same idea... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuhari

Slightly referring to the original post, I saw Piff last night in Nottingham (The Corner House and he's on again tonight if anyone fancies going!) and he was excellent. His was the middle act of three, the others being stand up comics and his act was superb as usual. Plenty of audience involvement on and off stage, a neat twist of finding a signed card in an impossible location. I was right at the side of the stage so could see a few of the get ready moves but no secrets given away, the tacular worked well as did Mr.Piffles the remarkably patient little dog in dragon costume – plenty of ‘Aaaah!’s from the audience on his appearance. Gentle, laid back and very amusing magic at its finest.

In my own opinion, I think sleights and moves are okay to incorperate into your routine. (sometimes its always best to get in touch with the original magician if possible, you would be supprised with the positive response you may get, sometimes they may even give you tips). Most magicians from experience are okay as long as they are credited i.e in a description on a youtube video or a book. I think what reaallllly bugs magicians is not the moves or sleights, its whats called a performers "schtick"...If you start to use someone else Schtick then you may be in for some hostile responses!!

When you start to build a routine, everyone copies a little bit from different performers that you like, but once you start to work on routines and work on who you are as a magician, you'll find your own personality and your own voice. Take out one of their lines, add in one of your own.
