well first of all it isnt a trick as such.. its a gambling scam that occasionally is used by magicians for expose type effects... two versions i can highly recommend reading are the ones in "Expert at the card table" by Erdnase or Darwin Ortiz version in the "At the card table" book/video

I'd also recommend "Daryl does the full monte", a DVD that has most of the variations for non gimmicked (and more than a few gimmicked) versions of this generic effect

Whit Haydn's Notes on the Three Card Monte is excellent. It is comprehensive and includes lots of historical background. If you want something cheaper (about £7 rather than £25) then Lewis Ganson's Teach-In on the Three Card Monte is very good (could be out of print though).

This is where I learnt it from, and have had much success... however to begin with, I do seem to recall having problems with smart-a*se spectators saying "Well you want me to say it's there, so it must be there instead."

I don't know how, but I've got round that now.

..don't you just HATE smart-a*se spectators...

I had a similar problem Zack with speck. I carry a miniture bike deck and hand it out, saying here's a small deck for small minded people.

They usually shut up then.

If you're interested in the 3 Card Monte as a card trick there are many excellent versions.

However the Real work on the 3CM is much harder to find.
As far as I know, only Whit Haydn has produced anything approaching the true story.
The stuff the magicians have produced is as authentic as the cowboys in the Western movies.

You have to remember - this stuff is highly illegal in America (and most places). It is NOT gambling - it's confidence trickery, and is always tied in very closely with drugs, violence, gang warfare etc.
The Tosser (yes, that's what he is really called!) never works alone - it's too dangerous. He'll have perhaps a dozen accomplices forming a crowd around him and keeping lookout. If you find yourself in the middle of these "gentlemen" playing the game, you will lose your money or you're in serious trouble. Some of these guys will be carrying knives....

Haydn has produced a double DVD on the subject featuring people like Gazzo who has been there and done it. I haven't seen the DVD myself but I've heard that's it's the only authoritative work on the subject - the other guys are too scared to talk.

Oh, and the card moves are a very small part of the story....

Ultimate Three Card Monte

Postby threeofclubs » Jan 1st, '05, 18:21

Amazing and Easy version of this effect is the Ultimate Three Card Monte by Mr. Skinner. I have been using this for a while and will continue for long time to come. This is not a street performance as much as a show performance as it is obviously not examinable

From my limited understading, saxmad is quite right.

Sal Piacante has produced a DVD of a 'street' version of the three card monte and I seem to recall that in the blurb he says that if you see people working the scam, just keep on walking. Even if you know how the trickery is done, don't get involved.

As such, his DVD might also be a little more realistic, but I've not seen it, so cannot say whether the 'street' part of the title is just a gimmick.

I got Three card monte by Sal Piacente and it teaches you how to do the most important moves.. You should also take a look at the bonus wich teaches an other monte effect wich is pretty cool along with another monte with discs wich is useless.....
He doesn't tell you about the "teamwork" lookouts and so but gives you a good view of the street monte..

you could also try

Gordon Bean's Mont 3.0 (I believe this is also known as Temptation). A fantastic 3 card monte effect that you perform in your hands rather than on a table. Really strong and you can have the final 3 cards examined at the end of the effect (but only at then end). Really powerful but takes a shile to learn all of the moves and the patter. instantly resets too. there are other references to it on the forum. Might be worth doing a search.

If you want to learn the real Monty then I would definitely have a look at Daryl's Ultimate Monty DVD. That is really strong and covers all of the techniques as well as several routines, including 2 by dai vernon.

3 Card Monte

Postby S_adamson1 » Mar 6th, '05, 21:09

IF you are looking for a 3 card monte trick get unconquered card. But the real monte isnt so much a trick as it is a gambling scam. I recommend daryl does the full monte. This is a great routine I found a web site that teaches it I will try and find it again and post it at a later date. The best part of this trick in my opinion is the bent corner move. Hope this helps for any advice email me at s_adamson1@hotmail.com
