Effects that stand the test of time...

Postby Rob » Feb 4th, '12, 02:35

Amongst all of the CUPS-induced, bottom-drawer clutter, and latest/greatest must-have, ultra-hyped effects, I suspect we all have an old favourite; that one effect that - if we could ONLY keep one trick - we simply wouldn't hesitate to save.

Here's the deal:

1) What SINGLE effect has stood the test of time, for you, to such an extent that you wouldn't be without it?
2) Why couldn't you be without it?
3) Please also provide a link to a review or demo, if you're able, so others can easily see what they're missing (and buy it immediately!!)

Although I'm now 90% mental now I'd still have to go with the sponge bunnies. They've given my more fun than any other routine I've got.

Well I also got Daryl's ACR DVD early on in my magic study, and some of my ACR routine is based on some of the moves taught there.

If I had to pick one routine I do to keep, it would be Recapped.

If I had to pick a gimmicked thing, then um... I don't know, don't use much gimmicks in my close up stuff.

I'd say my own card under the card case routine. I've been using it for years now and although it periodicaly evolves, and so is not entierly the same as at the beginning, it is so fun to perform and get's great reactions and responces from audiances.

Next to this it would be my own Out of this World. Again fun to perform and get's great reactions. These really are winnning routies but are probably even more special to me as they're mine.

I wouldn't be with out my pack of Boris Wild's cards...

But as far as just one trick goes, I guess it'll be Strange Travellers!

Coinvexed sharpie addition. I've been using it for so long the sharpie gimmick is now more silver than black. I've been using it for so long the routine bores me to the point I dread people asking me to show them a trick, because it's still my go to trick for a strong first impression.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Signed Card in Wallet, when I first saw this as a child it stunned me, it seemed so impossible, I actually thought the spectator may have been a stooge of the magician. I use it myself now and it always gets a strong reaction.

For my kids shows, I would be lost without a TT, pocket hanky, and a balloon for the balloon swallow. Those three routines are keepers.

For adults, cold-reading skills are what I would not do without. I am also quite partial to an ID.
