Hypnosis worries me.

Postby Mancunian Lee » Feb 10th, '12, 12:12

I know nothing about hypnosis so that maybe why.

Last night I was on a ghost walk and the guy running it pulled me from the crowd and started to go through the imagine yourself in a circle of white light etc and I thought oh dear, he has singled me out. I considered my options, let myself get hypotised, play along or get out quick.

I decided to get out quick and started to prat about, I probably did the wrong thing but it worked and he picked on someone else who took my queue lol. But I have nothing to fear do I? its just me being silly isnt it?

Yes, it is. Many of us doing hypnosis for a living have serious doubts whether the state exists or not. There is certainly nothing to fear about it. Next time just go along with it and enjoy the experience.

I am finding an increasing number of people have a fear, which makes shows more troublesome. I don't know why that is.

Ah! This one's simple. You suddenly look up to one corner, wait a beat, and then say: "What's that, Subconscious? Yes I think he's an idiot too. You want me to do what? Hurt him? That's not very nice is it. Well, yes, I suppose he was going to try to make you look a fool." Then stare at him and say: "I think you'd better f**k off". Keep staring.

In my opinion you don't have that much to worry about, but it depends you suggestible you are and how much you 'lose' yourself in your imagination. I guess if you really take it seriously and imagine something sinister, etc. then it could genuinely be quite a scary experience (bit like Derren Brown's Blair Witch Illusion). But that is down to you; hypnosis is based on your belief (not religious belief obviously, but your belief that you can be hypnotised, that you are entering a trance state, that you are back to normal, etc). You're not going to be 'stuck' in a hypnotic state, unless you believe that you are. So it is within your control, is what I'm trying to say.

Just so we don't end up repeating much of what's already been said before, can I refer folks to these threads, to continue tthe discussions?
