First 9 year old show

Postby taneous » Dec 3rd, '04, 13:34

I just did my first show for a group of 9 year olds. My show is aimed at 4-6 year olds and I'm really comfortable doing that, but I was really nervous about doing a show for this age group. I keot some of the kid's stuff - silks, etc and some of the fun gags, but I told them "This is what I do for my kiddie's show - do you want to see some of it?" - so they felt like I was letting them in on something, rather than me playing down to them.
I started off with a sponge ball routine and then some rubber band effects, but in a really casual way - as if the show hadn't started yet. It went well - also 'disarmed' them and they relaxed into the entertainment.

I did some of the stuff I do for adults and that also went down really well - The spoon bending especially. One of the kid's shouted out "Frikken heck!" - which I took as a complement.
They weren't too taken with the card stuff I did - but I'm not that good with cards, so I need to maybe just sign that off as a bad idea.
I ended off with a levitation of a piece of flash paper and (with the mother's permission) lit it so it 'vanished into thin air'. Unfortunately it was a little damp from being in my pocket so it didn't burn as quick as it did when i rehearsed it so I burnt my hand slightly - but nothing serious.
They asked me tio do it again and fortunately I had a spare piece of flash paper and my dove pan full of sweets - in case the levitation didn't work out. so I lit the fp and it turned into sweets.

I had fun. It was nice to perform for kids who I could reason with. They were a lot easier to control than the small kiddies. Looks like I found a new market. I need to polish the show up a bit, but I think I'll do more of these..

Well done. The upper age of primary schools can appreciate some card tricks (More the colour change and ACR style than the 'pick a card' routines). Here then there is a great one for them I found.

LOL - I've done that a couple of times on a "Hit and run" basis - like in a shopping mall or this youth project I used to be involved in, but I shudder at the thought of doing a whole show. Maybe some day :)
