Getting a 7 y.o. started in magic (UK)?

Postby LittleSkink » Feb 14th, '12, 22:02

Hi folks, first post but I suspect not my last

We got our daughter an Eddys Magic Kit today as a half term holiday present to keep her entertained. She was so very excited (and it wasnt particulalry cheap) but the excitement only lasted about 2 minutes as the tricks were so poorly made they barely worked or they didnt actually work at all - utter rubbish

Tomorrow I will return to the shop and get our money back, in the mean time been trying to find something better - being UK based the choice seems a lot more limited, and certainly amazon.co.uk doesnt seem to be a the best place to start

What I have seen of the UK online retailers seem to be focussed more at the hobbyist, but presumably you all got started somewhere

Even if we end up buying a handful of simple tricks (made properly) for our £20 (or so) that might be a much better outcome than 125 pointless ones. With her age I thought cup/ball and ring tricks are maybe a better place to start than cards but an utter novicde in all this too

thanks in advance folks

Personally I'd recommend the dynamic coins (get the Marvins magic version). I brought that using all my pocket money when I was 5 years old and never looked back!

With the Marvins magic version you can make it vanish in the box as well - double the magic!

Love

thanks folks

we got our money back on the Eddys kit and (after much deliberation) ordered a Melissa and Doug kit from Amazon, it seems like a nice place to start

the coin trick looks too good for my 7yo, I might have to get that for me :)

I have a bit of a problem sharing my "best" tricks with my son. :D

He does a great sponge ball routine for a 9-yr-old though!

I used to finish of Dynamic coins, by doing coins through table.
Catching them in a glass, underneath.

Marvin's stuff is great for kids and beginners. Self-working tricks to begin with will make her confident. This site does some cheap, easy stuff which are good for kids to learn with including this set:
