Reset: Too complicated for an audience to recall?

Postby LucidDragon » Feb 22nd, '12, 12:14

Hey All

If any of you were at or have seen the dvd's for the essential magic conference 2011 (I think) you know that guy hollingworth has a packet trick the he created but doesn't even like. The reason that he says he doesn't like it is because it complicated for the audience to recall to someone else, if they so wished.
I was practicing Paul Harris's "Reset" just now and thought that it is, in a way, in the same relm as Guy's trick, such that its fairly complicated to recall what happened. Now "Reset" is a wonderful trick but what is your guys opinions on this? do you think that its too complicated for an audience to recall or is it just on the right side if simple?

Keep it simple. I do a strolling version with the cards already set up. people love it.
It's easy to follow, you show four aces, they change into kings then back to aces. Simple.

I avoided Reset for a long time because it was too confusing for the audience. ON Bill Malone's first DVD set even the L&L audience have a hard time faking appreciation at exactly the right moments, while their minds catch up with where the cards are "supposed" to be.

The cure is very simple, Reswindled by Caleb Wiles. I read it in Magic a few years ago but it has been released on a very well taught DVD recently called Rematch.

A very nice handling, with a plot that makes sense, rationalises where everything has been placed and makes the whole thing a lot easier to follow, highly recommended.

I've always hated the original Reset. Hard to follow and confusingly at the best of times. The cards are together in groups to often and the counts just don't look right.

I recently saw a version on the Red Mirror DVD by Helder Guimaraes that eliminates everything I hated about it. The two packets are clearly separated on the table with a logical reason as to why the cards change etc. Everything is done at a nice slow pace and it isn't full of kicker ending after kick ending.

David Stones version on The Real Secrets of Magic DVD is very concise and direct.
I've never had a problem with audiences not following it. Sometimes magicians over-patter, taking attention away from the effect itself. Some tricks don't require people blathering on and the magic talks for itself.
