magic at a house party

Postby Flood » Feb 24th, '12, 20:43

Hey guys.

Got a house party coming up tomorrow so hopefully I can get a few answers squeezed in between now and then.

I have about 12-15 tricks that I often do at gigs for different people.I'm wondering what's the best way to plan tricks for house parties.I'm hired for an hour and I'm not too sure ie I have enough material.obviously for other gigs with 100s of people it's more than enough showing everyone the same sets etc.

Ideally I could go around different groups in the house but in previous experience what happens is everyone crowds around at once.anyone have an ideal solution to combat this

Any replies appreciated

To hold an audience for one hour in a house will take a lot of doing.

Ask whoever booked you if you could work for 3 lots of 20 minutes.
Then the audiene can talk together, eat, drink & generally fraternize in between. THIS is your excuse if asked.

OR perhaps better still

Do 2 x 25 minutes.
The bookers will not be standing by timing you.

You can always go round later & perform a couple of tricks only to the little groups that tend to cling togethe in house parties.

This situation is where you could use a few entertainments stunts.
Like my Invisible Balloon Competition.

Even get 3,4 5 ladies up/out and give them a newspaper each. Show them how to pleat it into fold and get them to tear out a row of dolls or a fancy lace table cloth.
Small prize for the winner. It involves them & you could precede it or follow it with a trick with paper.

You ought to read It's Not All Magic if you could find a copy or the extended version--Profit At The Party put out by Supreme magic.
Both are by David Hallett

If you select a small number of tricks that can be repeated, you will never regret it.

Just have 2 more in reserve just in case.

last house party i did.. I think i did 2 tricks.
over, and over again. ( for several hours)

I then did some pendulum work, and read tarot cards.

and had many long conversations.

they had a superb time, i got great feed back, and... I enjoyed the evening too! :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....
