Orthodox Deck Grip?

Postby Magus » Apr 2nd, '12, 18:18

Hi folks,

Is there a 'normal' hand to grip a deck of cards in if you are right handed or does the deck hand change with various effects? or do I practice them all until I'm comfortable with both hands?

Reason I'm asking is that I'm currently learning the basic sleights and having a bit of trouble with the DL. I can't get the 2 cards up easily without it feeling very clumsy. Is it just a case of practice practice practice or is there a preferred hand to do the lift with?

Sorry if it's a bit of a daft question but I'm not sure if I should just be concentrating on one hand rather than trying with both.

Thanks in advance,

Shaun.

You usually hold the deck in the opposite hand to what "handed" you are. Right handed people hold it in the left hand and turn cards over etc with the right hand and the opposite for the left handers.

I'm one of the exceptions to the "usually" above, just to prove the rule. I just feel more comfortable holding the deck in my right hand and dealing and turning over with my left (and overhand shuffling into my left).

Though there are some sleights that I find easier the traditional way, so I am trying to re-learn some of the moves. For example, I typically E*****y count from right to left, but Flush******n and H****n count from left to right.

I suppose it's whatever you're most comfortable with, but if you need to change hands to do a move, that will draw attention to it (hence my re-learning).

...sorry. Should have read overhand shuffling from left to right too. Must have been typing with my left hand

Thanks Lenoir,

I must admit that it feels slightly more 'natural' holding it in my left hand and I always shuffle into my left hand. Maybe it's just I need to stick with it and keep practicing. I'm sure it will come.
