Hi Chris, welcome to TM, hope you enjoy chatting here. The dreaded shakes eh, very common but will ease with experience and confidence

Thanks seems very friendly on here which is nice I seem to be okay after I've shown a few tricks it's when I show someone who's never seen me do magic before the nerves just get to me but hopefully I'll get it under control, finished work now so need to do some reading on patter as mines terrible at the moment if it can even be classed as patter and it just draws more attention to the slights when I have nothing to say which I could do without thanks for the replys wasn't expecting anything till tonight

Welcome Chris,
Don't worry about the "shakes". Practice takes care of that.

I'm sure most of us get the shakes, the nerves or, in my case, a bit of voice loss but there are methods to deal with these situations. Deep breathing, a few minutes 'meditation' where you focus on something other than magic and, in my case, a barley sugar sweet which works wonders. Try different ideas and eventually you'll find something which works for you.

Thanks for the tips I'll give them a go this weekend as I've said I'd show my brother, his girlfriend and my nephew some tricks should have the first part of 13 steps to mentalism arriving today which I'll have to resist until I feel competent with cards 1958 original for £2.99 on eBay bargain in my eyes

The shakes come to all of us. If you suffer try to follow a simple system:-
Be well rehearsed. If you have to think what your hands are doing you have not rehearsed enough. If you have to think what you are going to say next you have not rehearsed enough. If you have to concentrate on any part of the trick, or act, you have not rehearsed enough.
The shakes are caused by adrenalin. It's the fight or flight response. The body is moving into top efficiency mode. It affects some of us more than others. Make sure that you don't do anything that transmits any tension to your audience. For example I could never carry an open sheet of paper onto a stage. The shaking of my hands would ratttle the paper like castanettes. If I have to carry a sheet of paper on I roll it or fold it up! As soon as the first applause comes the shakes miraculously disappear.
Many performers would give a thousand pounds not to have to go on stage but, after the first clap would not take a thousand to come off!
I remember a very good amateur actress hitting herself over the head with a rolled up newspaper saying "I do this for fun! I do this for fun!", just before her entrance.
A young actress once told the great Sahra Bernhardt that she had never suffered from stagefright. The reply was "Don't worry dear. It comes with talent!"

Can't believe the amount of tips I've received after being on here for a day thank you all for being so welcoming has to be the most friendly forum I've been on. I think my main problem is knowing what to say I was thinking of writing a script but havnt got a clue where to start I don't mind stories to go with tricks but havnt used any because the people I preform for know I only just started magic and a lot of what I've heard refers to learning magic as a child or similar think I need to watch more card magic for inspiration
