Weathering glass

Postby bottlemaster » Apr 26th, '12, 20:28

Hi all

A bit of an odd question, but does anybody know how to artificially weather or age a glass bottle, aside from leaving it buried in the earth for several decades?

This is magic-related (honest)!

I'm assuming that such aging would need the bottle to be encrusted with the patina of time and environment, i.e covered in dust which is mostly stuck to the glass. Perhaps a layer of some kind of adhesive - glue, wallpaper paste, PVA and them light layers of dirt, dust, sand, ashes etc flung at it. As with aging cards or other props, less is more and only the bare minimum will be needed to be convincing.

One of the earlier issues of Mystic Menagerie covers this in part of an effect for creating orbs within a seance environment, tips are given on aging the storage jar.

Thanks for the tips. I definitely agree with the 'less is more' approach - the bottle still needs to be fairly transparent so that the contents are visible, so I can't have too much stuck to it.

Vanderbelt - do you know where I can access this info?

I find that glass looks worn after lots of time rubbing against other glass in racks of bottles or in dishwashers. Possibly some sanding and then rub dirt on the roughened, less stick-proof surface?
