just got this yesterday and I'm having trouble with it. I'd like a few routines and a way for it to stop retracting. i know of the "z" grip

There are video's and books dedicated to this particular prop. And one of the key points is that it is supposed to retract unless the other side is anchored to something. The 'electronic' reels don't retract until you want them too, (sometimes, supposedly, now and again...)
